Modellers Datafile books

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Does anyone know where I may be able to buy, off t'net, the excellent SAM Publications Modellers Datafile books?

I've looked on Hannants and Amazon and can't find anything. I also looked on the SAM website, and some of the ones I wanted (Spit & Mossie) are out of stock.

I have the wonderful Hurricane book, and it's a wonderful resource for kit building.

(I borrowed it from my friend Mark Stanton, and then forgot to give it back to him when he moved back to England. Sorry mate! Here's a link to your book on Amazon though http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scale-Aircraft-Mod...5635&sr=1-1 - Top book. Well worth looking at).

Anyway, if anyone knows where I could get some of these books, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,

Nick

No hope of getting the Mossie one though as that's been out of print for many years...(it's excellent by the way)...the only hope there is second hand items from specialist shops and e-bay...trouble is the last one went on e-bay for £37!!!...gulp! And I've only ever seen one other in Midland Counties books and I think they were asking £25 but it had a damaged cover.

I bought the SAM books, and use them, solely, for the photos, and sketches; for instance, it's the only book, that I've seen, which shows an unrebuilt Mk.I, with the original cockpit colour. As with all things Caruana, treat the "scale" drawings with deep suspicion, though. The Mosquito book does have some useful photos, and sketches, but the modelling section is rather mirth-producing, since every model has one elevator up, and the other down, like ailerons. The Beaufighter, and Hurricane, books are identical, in format, but the caveat, regarding the drawings, is especially important, on the Hurricane. I suggest that only Arthur Bentley's NEW drawings should be used, since he, recently, amended them, following Peter Cooke's research.

Like Edgar I would say the Datafile books are worth having for the walk rounds and sketch pages. The rest is so, so. Worth checking the SAMI web site, they do cut price bundles.

With regard to the Osprey books I have picked up a few of the Combat Aircraft and Aircraft of the Aces volumes and they are generously illustrated with photos, colour profiles and line drawings. Love 'em.

Thanks for the help guys.

John, if you want to sell your copy, and if you can find it, do let me know.

I'll probably try and pick a couple of other's from Hannants when I'm back in the UK in September.

Until then, I'll just keep bothering you all for pictures of headrests and the like!

Cheers,

Nick

Isn't it interesting how these books elicit differing responses from different people! I looked at the early one sand they didn't have anything that I didn't have elsewhere, or was all that interested in.

I have the Lancaster one, as I didn't have anything that detailed the various marks comprehensively, and it had details of the ASR Lifeboat attachment point. I have to say I think it's a good book, but my critisism is that most of the detail photos are far too small - I think they have tried to cram too much in in making it a 'one stop shop' with in a price range. I'd happily see less of the 'modelling' and profile pages for bigger photos

Crivens thats a hefty price they go for,i have the 2 Spit ones, the Griffon one being my favourite.

I was on the lookout for the Mossie one,but would balk at the prices they go for. I would sooner spend that kind of money on a random Hikoki title though.

I have the Lightning and Meteor books, and reviewed the Lightning one for Internet Modeler:

The English Electric Lightning

After my review was on the net, Richard Caruana wrote me an e-mail pointing out a couple of mistakes I had made in the review - it was done in a totally civil manner, and I didn't mind at all.

A couple of years ago, SAM offered several of these titles at a very deep discount directly through IPMS chapters - if you belong to an IPMS chapter, it might be worth getting in touch with the chapter contact to see if these are still valid.
