Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello all ... So Im going to Throw my hat in the Ring for this build. I have a 2nd hand Revell A-6E Intruder from a friend. It will be a straight OOB build with whatever i can scratch together for the cockpit. I will edit and add the sprue shots later tonight when i can. I will build it as an early “E” type in 1972. Markings will be VA-65 Tigers. It will look like this. The A-6 photo’s are from Tailspin turtles excellent blog about the Intruder. Thanks for allowing me to repost these. http://tailspintopics.blogspot.com/2015/09/grumman-6a-vs-6e-intruder.html I only have the standard markings with the kit. It doesn't come with the orange-red chevrons and tail codes of VA-65. I am planning on painting these using home made masks. There was an old Microscale sheet in 1/48 scale from many years ago. I seriously doubt any even exist now, and AOA is actually supposed to be releasing them in 1/32 scale. Now if AOA downsizes the sheet in the near future then I will purchase them. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Disaster folks ... just realized the wings are AWOL ! I have everything but them. Sadly you cant build a plane without wings. I remember them being in the box when i got it from the person. I can remember test fitting them to the Fuselage. So they did exist at one point. I will have to go through some storage in the hopes they're in a different box. Wish me luck. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Well its Official ☹️ The Intruders wings took flight at some point in the last year ? I can only think i must’ve accidentaly placed the wings into a different box at some point and then threw that box out ? Want to talk about Embarrassing. Like my earlier post said I recieved the kit 2nd hand and know the wings were in there ? I dod some preliminary test fitting to see the general fit of the kit. Then i didnt touch the box for 9-10 months. I was getting ready to do the kit so pulled it out of the storage two weeks ago. Though i never opened it until yesterday. So I have a question for @trickyrich as you are in charge of this build. May i switch to this Hasegawa F-18C Hornet ? It would be built as a VFA-86 Sidewinders Hornet, and look like this. 🔺 If Yes should I use this thread and edit it, or start a new one ? I await your verdict ? Mind you I was all excited to do the Intruder, however have no way at this time to replace it ? Dennis 🔺 = I use this photo for informational purposes only, the ownership belongs to others. Knight_Flyer
That's a shame. I did read the original novel and a follow up one, trying to remember if Jake Grafton was an Admiral in that one. The Hornet isn't a bad looking aircraft either - should be a good enough replacement.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
I believe there a few books in the series. The 2nd story i do believe he was an CAG. Then there was “Intruders” which kind of fits between the two stories.

You can just amend the header if you like, no need to start a new thread.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Ok so were changing this to a Hornet. Here are the sprue shots. I have a minor start on this, the cockpit is started using an old Black box set. I have clipped the wings also as i will be using a wolfpack wingfold set here. The nose, intakes ⬆️, and two of the 4 droptanks ⬇️ are also done. This box ⬇️ contains white metal landing gear and some photoetch from Hasegawa. I believe thats less than 25% so here we go. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everybody ... So this is todays update. Ive got the Fuselage together and the intakes (all 10 pieces that make up the two intakes) completely attached. Close up of the pit from behind and Above. Next up comes the real fun. I get to sand fill and sand some more to get what i have done looking decent. Wont be any pictures of the sanding as we all know what that looks like. So until the next stage of construction i say have a great modeling day. Any questions ? Comments ? Or jokes ? Dennis
trickyrich
you've made so quick progress Dennis, well done. Looks like you will have a wee bit of work with some of those joins. With any that have gaps, try using stretched sprue to fill those, it's easy to clean up, no messy filler and you don't loose as much detail. For the others, mask off the area to be filled, then use small amounts of filler, allow to dry then add another thin layer. I find the filler ends up overall drying quicker and these's less chance of it shrinking. Leave the tape mask on until you've finished cleaning up the join, that way there's less chance of damaging the surrounding detail.

Corsairfoxfouruncle
Not much of an update and no photo’s. A case of life getting in the way. SWMBO has another O/P surgical procedure tomorrow morning. So not much time for work until we get home after that. I have been able to add the nose to the fuselage and finished the rough sanding on the main fuselage. The Hasegawa F-18 Hornet doesn't have any detail in the intakes it just goes to open space inside the model. Lack of anything sufficient to simulate the faces of the engines leaves me little in options, so I have attempted something new on this build. I molded kitchen foil to create soft FOD covers. thanks to a suggestion in the aircraft chat section from @DaveJL. The foil is on and the glue is drying. If it works i can paint them a base color, for the duration of the build process. Then i will airbrush the ghost grey around them. Finally i will hand paint the squadron colors onto the FOD covers. Ive done something similar when i made my VFC-111 aggressors a couple of years ago but used a different material for those. If everything works i will post photo’s of the work and FOD Covers tomorrow. Dennis PS - I have a friend in Florida who has a spare set of wings for an A-6 so that will get built someday. Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello Everybody ... As promised some photo’s. I did a little work today & painted the landing gear bays and doors. I just added a wash as well. Im about 1/2 way done with my sanding at this stage. Finally a close up of the foil FOD Covers. Im painting them grey now just to stiffen them and as a basecoat. Next they get black and orange for the Squadron colors. But that will be after the ghost greys are done on the plane. As usual questions ? comments ? Or jokes ? CliffB
Good progress Dennis. Those bays look nice and busy. Cliff
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello @CliffB ... They were still very wet when i photographed them im sure they will be a less stark black/brown now. And most of it will have of course settled into the recesses. I’ll add more photos later in the build to show the finished bays. Dennis
trickyrich
those covers look great Dennis, I've used foil before on one for my F-16. I like the wheel bays, they look nice and busy and a bit grimy to.
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everybody ... So for todays update. Ive been trying to cram as much time on this as possible. I have the wing control surfaces assembled and seperated for the wing fold. Everythings ready for paint now. Everythings masked up as you can see in these two photos. I tend to do things a bit backwards occasionally. This time most things will be painted before assembly. Since this Hornet has Lt. Ghost grey on both inside and outside of the vertical stabs. It makes it easier to do it this way with less masking. Wing control surfaces along with other parts in the box Here we have everything getting Dk. Ghost grey tomorrow. This will be done first on this build. Wish i could've remembered to photograph the exhausts before i assembled them. But heres a couple pictures showing the bits you can see. The heat tiles were painted a mix of white, cream, and grey-green to get a color that looks close to my eye. The landing gear is all done just needs a second coat of white and bare metal in the key parts yet. The main gear aren't glued yet. Just together to see what they look like. Well enough for tonight. Next update will be when the Dk. Grey is on along with clearcoat. As usual questions ? comments ? Or jokes? Corsairfoxfouruncle
Hello everybody ... Finished the fuselage painting and have most of the minor detail work finished as well. The sub assembly wings and outer wings were interesting to say the least. I couldnt quite figure out how to assemble the flaps from the instructions, Thanks hasegawa for the clarity. Now there were no real guides to go by. So the hinge points on the outer wing didn't exactly work out the best ☹️. Oh well im not doing this for anyone else but myself i guess i can live with it. I think it is going to be easier to decal the flat surfaces with the parts off the plane so thats the plan. The burner cans are done. I added some colors next along with a wash to tone them down. The pylons and ordnance are painted. They just need some markings on the ordnance before i glue it to the pylon and BRU rack. The landing gear is completely painted. Put a wash on the legs tonight so we’ll see how that turns out. Well thats enough for todays update. As usual any questions ? comments ? Or jokes ?
