Revell 1/72 Sea Hurricane Mk.IIC

I can’t quiet decide at the moment which one of these I will fail to build for this GB. All have some merit. The Swordfish looks appealing but I suspect new decals will be required and I may succumb to a doomed attempt at rigging. The Camel is quite charming but is very small and I fear will end badly, on the other hand it’s size means rigging is out of the question. The Sea Hurricane is probably the favourite but I was horrified to find that I’d bought some Eduard PE for it sometime previously - if I can force myself into an OOB build it might be the one.

Yes, one tends to order after market goodies without even noticing it... I suspect we go into a transe and become overcome by automatic typing, eyes looking some 1000 miles ahead. Even the credit card number comes out of febrile fingers tapping the keyboard.

And then the postman delivers these unbidden goods.... and it is now time to find a good explanation for your better half, scowling over your shoulder at the package. "I was in a transe" won't buy it!!!

So now that you remember how the Hurricane after markets arrived in the box, may I suggest the Hurri? As a first build, of course!

Cheers

JR

That's an interesting boxing of the Sea Hurricane, new to me.  NF721 of 787 Sq, Z Flight, used to investigate the FAA use of rockets in early 1943 then passed on to 760 Sq at Inskip for training pilots in the use of RP.  So I suspect that it shouldn't have the guns mounted.  Like the previous boxing featuring another Inskip unit (766, which was actually 760 renamed, but NF721 didn't last until then).  Maybe the guns were kept initially, but the poor thing would have been a bit overloaded.  Ah well, they'd have found that out soon enough.

welcome aboard, interesting choices you have.

The Sea Hurricane would be nice, but so would the old "string bag", nobodies building either yet.

Good luck with your choice, look forward to seeing which way you go

What’s worse, I’ve bought quite a lot - I’ve also bought some brass guns. However...

Less pointy bits, things might be swinging towards the Hurricane. And big thanks to Graham for all the info, Plan A was to do the ‘Libby’ version but if an unarmed NF721 doesn’t infringe the rules of the GB then I might go with that.

Thanks, I might do both with the initial effort going into the Hurricane

You’ll have to wait for that particular joy

Sea Hurricane, with PE. Go on, you know you want to.

You’re a bad man, I’m fairly certain I don’t.

Now you have got me baffled - what's the "Libby" version?  One of the white ones?

I live just up the road from Inskip - can't quite see the radio masts from this room.  So anything connected is interesting, I'm only glad you saw it that way too.  There are photos of 766 Sq SHs crash-landed on HMS Ravager elsewhere on this forum - Troy has copies if you need to ask him.  They show the mounting points for the rocket rails - you don't actually have to fit rockets just bodge up some fittings with plastic card.

NF699, which is the other decal option was named ‘Libby’ after the main pilot’s (Major Cheesman) girlfriend. It flew off HMS Striker and there should be a photo of it after taking a bump on landing at this webpage http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/ESCORT/Galleries/STRIKER_Gllery_2.htm  but it won’t load on my iPad.

I think the way forward will be to build up most of the kit and then consider the decal and scratching options, again many thanks for the info.

The pictures in the link won't load onto my desktop, either.  I can't seem to find any way around the site into the Photo Gallery by any other route than your link.

I know, it’s a bit of a shame as that looks to be a useful page of photos. In other news I’ve just bought some more aftermarket bits for the Hurricane and the Swordfish. I’m an idiot.

I think all the pics are here,  and worth a read as about Sea Hurricane IIc's  in general,   including the Inskip Ravager pics

I tried this but frustratingly it didn’t work for me. I’ll maybe try a different embed fix in Firefox this afternoon.

Ok, I’m off and running at an unusually fast speed, I doubt it will last but I’ll enjoy it while I can.

First up, the admin shots - box and sprues

The first decision of the day - to dry brush the IP detail or bung on the transfer.

In the end I went with the transfer even though I was drawn to the decent level of detail.

A quick prime and blast of interior grey green followed by dry brush of the detail (subsequently weathered/messed up with a splodge of Agrax Earthshade)

Cockpit and IP in, fuselage zipped up and the wheel wells inserted. All this before teatime on day two, a small celebration will be in order.

Good luck with whatever YOU decide to build don't let the other boys bully you ! ;)

cheers Pat

That's because Sea Hurricanes didn't have folding wings. Just arresting hooks and catapult gear.

that's quick work, she's coming along nicely, at this rate you'll be able to build all three!

I don’t know about that, I’m kinda tempted to put the Swordfish in the RAF Centenary GB though.

Could have been quite fun - but not sure how Hawkers could have done it without excessive weight increase.

It did cross my mind that a rag wing one might fold up like a deckchair or a concertina.

The wife’s out with her pal getting some culture, son’s out with his girlfriend getting..er..whatever*, there’s no football on the telly - time to crack on.

Filling, sanding and Mr Surfacing (Round One). Nasty step at the wing root and stuff to sort on the underside, fingers crossed it will be ready for the spray booth come Saturday.

*KFC, most likely
