Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6AS, JG1 Revell 1/72 scale

Recommended Posts

The Revell Bf 109G-10 is something of a "curate's egg". The issues, and my solutions, such as they are, are detailed here:

This second model got the same treatment as regards the wheel wells, tail, cockpit and the like. I had to make a new set of moulds for the supercharger intake and wheel bulges. I'm not sure whether it was the cold making the mould brittle, or solvent from the casting resin (filler) diffusing into the silicone, but the detail was lost. A new set solved the problems.

After priming, the aircraft went RLM76 all over. I've seen several photographs of aircraft of this type and role. That role was to escort fighter aircraft! The Focke Wulf FW190's that were tasked with attacking American bombers were overburdened with armour and additional weapons, and the marginal performance of the type of at high altitude was degraded to the point where although they were capable of catching B17's and B24's, they were utterly unable to compete with escorting P-51's. Hence, specific squadrons of high-altitude optimised Bf 109's were tasked with escorting the bomber-killing fighters!

Some descriptions suggest these aircraft were painted in some odd, otherwise unknown colour. Based on the idea that if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebra, I'm going with RLM 76. All the photos seem over-exposed to a greater or lesser extent and shot with film that makes Ilford HP look soft and mellow, making the colour look very pale and washed-out, but the likelihood of a new, unknown colour seems vanishingly low.

The Print Scale decals weren't as well-behaved as in the past, and I managed to split and mangle one of the fuselage one of the fuselage crosses disasterously. I hand-painted the holes over, and I think the results match up well enough.

After a coat of Klear to seal the decals down, I went very, very lightly with a panel wash of burnt umber and ultramarine oil paint.

I'm hoping for just a bit of contrast, plus a sense of wear.

Welcome aboard! As I said, all the stuff about fixing the undercarriage leg position is on the Croatian Air Force G14 thread.

I read your build posts for the Croatian 109, and how you cast the special parts needed for that version. Could you tell me the brand name or source for the two-part acrylic resin and the two-part silicone mold material you use?

Thanks!

Bill
