These group builds keep coming.

My entry for this group build, harks back to the colourful interwar years of naval aviation and the yellow winged aircraft of the US Navy, Trumpeter's 1/700 USS Saratoga.

Not shown is the airwing, moulded in clear plastic, could get a decent photo.

Airwing comprises Grumman F3Fs, Curtiss BFC-2s, Vought SBU-1s and Great Lakes TG-2s.

Plan is to build full hull and out of the box.

Welcome aboard JB, and the first carrier of the build.

I don't know how you do 1/700th scale models, my eyes could handle such small stuff, I'm super impressed.

Good luk with the build, I look forward to seeing her in the gallery.

I will be building Lexington for the 'other' carrier GB later in the year.

Will be interested to see how you go with the Saratoga.

I will look out for your Lexington,

Made a start on the island & funnell. I'm glad I decided against the etch when I saw how small some of the parts are.

The original plan was to build the full hull, but was looking at my display cabinet the other day, and it occured to me that my vast collection (four) of 1/700 ships are all waterline, so will be building this waterline now.

Haven't posted for a while, but progress has continued slow and steady.

Started work on the hull. I am find some of the small parts time consuming to remove from the spruce and clean up.

Seem to spend a lot of time on my hands and kees negotiating with the carpet monster.

Modelling the lifts in the up position. Some scrap use to close the opening before fixing the lifts.

Not a great photo but the secondary armament completed.

In the paint shop. The boot line needs a bit of work, need to remask and paint.

Funnel showing the distinctive black identification stripe. Just a bit of touching up to do.

Been a couple of weeks since I posted, progress has been slow due to a re-occurrence of an old back injury which has prevented my sitting for any length of time. A couple of visits to a chiropractor this week has got me on the mend.

Painted the main deck. Bridge & funnel just placed on for effect.

Spent this glorious weekend putting the finishing touches to the carrier, in between bouts of gardening and watching the Tour de Yorkshire on tele.

Now need to make a start on the air wing. This comprises

6no. TG-2 Torpedo Aircraft. Manufactured by the Great Lakes Aircraft Company based on a Martin design.

9no. Grumman F3F Fighters

9no. Vought SBU dive Bombers

9no. Curtiss BFC-2 Fighter/Bombers

Slowly cracking on with the airwing. Each plane is like a mini kit with 4 or 5 parts. Not a fan of the clear plastic Trumpeter have used.

Taking a lot longer than building the carrier. Still have the decals to add.

recalling all those will be a long slow process!! Just don't sneeze!

I'd forgotten the air wing was all bi-planes, that also would have been fun to build and paint, even more so i clear plastic. Still you're doing a great job, looking forward to seeing her completed.

well done JB she looks fantastic I can't wait to see the closeup photos in the gallery. Plus it looks like you've got some of her airing in flight as well, very nice.

Thank you for joining us and bringing along this lovely model, I hope you enjoyed the build, it was great to follow you're progress.

She looks to be in nice company on the shelve.
