I know this GB is in full flow and I'm a bit late. I'd like to join with this Airfix SHAR which I bought just after it came out.

I have already slapped on a few coats of paint for the interior and detail but everything is still on the sprue so I'm sure it's well within the under 25% started.

I'm going to complete it as this 899 ship in Falklands war fit from HMS Hermes.

Although the 700 NAS conversion unit scheme is nice.

Some aftermarket; mask for the canopy and resin jet exhausts.

Airfix moulded the exhausts in two parts. Apart from the fact I've about 5 sets of exhausts in the stash, it's about three weeks work to get rid of the inevitable seams on the vanes.

So let's get going

Started this morning and got few sub assemblies done. Although managed to lose the control column to the carpet monster. Easily replaced with a short length of copper wire. The side panel transfer has come off. I have found it and will fix it on with a dab of Kleer.

interior parts glued into starboard fuselage.

And the cockpit in as well after a bit of touching up.

Welcome to the GB. You're off to a good start there and although we are a month in I'm sure there's plenty time remaining for you to get this one done.

I've not been able to do any modelling for about 6 weeks for various reasons so it was good to get this up and going. So here's the fuselage closed up. The middle section needed a lot of squeezing, glue, tape and rubber bands. Perhaps I should have done a bit more dry fitting and sanding. Will leave it overnight or so to set.

Found a problem with one with one of the tailplanes. I don't know if it came this way, or if I did it by forcing the sprues back not the box. I suspect the latter as I've laid down a coat of paint on one side and I think I would have notice.

Easily fixed; gently twisted back to shape, glued with some Tamiya Extra Thin and taped done to the cutting mat and to be left overnight.

First coat of Humbrol Gunmetal onto the resin exhausts. Looking good. And not a seam in sight.

Thats all for today, a bit more tomorrow when the tape comes off.

Ive not been able to do much as I've some problems with the joints in my hands and wrists but during the week I managed to fill and sand the joints on the fuselage. The fit wasn't ideal, especially around the front and the rear of the cockpit. But some Mr Putty and some sanding sorted it all out. The upper wing is one. Airfix would have you assemble the upper and lower wing sections beforehand but I thought for fit purposes it would be better to add the lower wings after the upper wing was solid.

Lower wings on. Strategy was sensible as a bit of trimming was needed at the wing root.

resized_7ca0b1ac-0148-4a6d-ab31-ba08e206

And the tailplanes and tail cone on.

ive also done a bit of detail painting and masked the inside of the intakes but that's me done for the day.

Only some minor work done during the week. But painstaking and relatively slow, so done in little bits. The intakes were masked off with Tamiya 4mm tape and some Extra Dark Sea Grey gently brushed on.

And here's the intakes attached. They are so prominent, it's important to get them looking right.

Now the airframe is almost ready  ready for its major paint job.

Some paint on the airframe now.

Xtracrylix Extra Dark Sea Grey thinned with Flow Improver and brushed on thinly with a broad flat brush.

  • 2 weeks later...

Paint on, nose cone fitted and some transfers on. I'll pop the canopy on and then finish the transfers before starting to add all the bits on.

Canopy masked and on.

Painted and mask removed.

I think I'll have to attack the fuselage roundels with some softening solution, but we're getting there.

A couple of sessions of fixing transfers on has got me here.

resized_789c5da1-2969-49f9-b1d4-3d00f47f

Now time to start the finishing off. There's a little bit of work to assemble paint, and more transfers, for the weapons load, but the undercarriage can be fixed on along with all the bits and the airframe will be complete. Some paint touching up needed but nothing onerous.

Jet exhausts on, along with most of the undercarriage.

Undercarriage and wheels on, along with a lot of the sticky out bits. The load is coming along but will take time as it has to be repainted and transfers stuck on.

resized_3ba87401-a688-4461-a0ce-d29c7a3e

The underside will need touched up as I had some problems fitting the cannons and got glue smears. I've done a little sanding but will leave it a while to harden up before smoothing off.

The pitot is commendably thin and well moulded. But I broke it after taking these photos and there is no way a plastic join will work. I think a bit of scratch building will be needed.

Almost done, transfers complete, tanks on and just awaiting the Sidewinders and undercarriage doors.  And a little touching up. Probably benefit from a coat of Satin varnish.

Getting closer to the end now

The undercarriage doors took a bit of trimming, not just removing the tags to hang them in the open position. Next time I would fit the doors before the undercarriage to make sure I could get in easy. Anyway, they are on and I'll leave them to dry before painting.

Here here is the raw material for a replacement pitot.

Great thread great build, I bought one of these on Saturday to go with my 3 Armada Skyhawks so I will be using your detailed thread to follow! Can't wait to see yours done.

Looking good mate, almost there.  I should really crack on with mine!

Thanks Blitz, is a reasonably straightforward build. And enjoyable. This has taken a bit of time because of everything else going on. And my inevitable ham fistedness.

Almost there :speak_cool: The green gunpods help add a bit of extra interest to this one.

They do add a contrast. I believe they were 'pinched' from a RAF GR3 in reality

Thanks. It's almost done and looks an aggressive little thing.
