U96 1/72 Type VII U-Boat (Revell 05015)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is my version of U96 completed late last year.

Thought it was about time I presented it for inspection.

No PE used but all handrails and other additional fine detailing made from soldered copper and brass wire.

Free flood vents opened up.

Rigging is Dacron.

Case constructed from 3mm glass stuck together with black polyurethane sealant and framed with painted aluminium angle.

Light weathering and rust.

My first attempt at fine scale and weathering.

Sits on our lounge mantle piece (for now) :blahblahblah:

Here's a link to my present project.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Really nice of you.

Had to hold myself back on the rust and weathering quite a bit.

The sub is currently tolerated on the mantle piece but if it was finished as a complete rust bucket, I'm sure a much less prominent display location would have been insisted upon.

their would be no way I would be allowed to park it on the mantle :nah:.

Know exactly what you mean.

It's tolerated for now and I have an agreement with a six month on, six month off deal.

Trouble is, with U-Boat number two in production, things might get tense.

Here's a pic of it on the mantle.

As you can see, there is a bit of a maritime theme going on.

Missus says the house is looking like a man cave.

I need a study.:D

a real conversation piece!

That's exactly what I said to her.:)

When compared with the mundane ornaments which would normally be on the mantle, it's in a different league.

Who wants to talk about mundane ornaments?

She still refuses to admit that its an improvement.

Ah well, still a few months left before it has to go away for six.

Thanks again for the great comments guys.

  • 7 months later...

Amazing, I've got two of these in my stash (long story) but haven't had the time or gumption to have a go yet.  I'll have a look through your U505 wip next to see what the build is like. Are they similar build processes?

Thanks for the "likes" Gav. The builds are similar but the U505 hull is in four pieces and the shape is quite different not to mention 4" longer!

Lots more handrails and detail too on U505 but gotta say, the type VII is very iconic sub.

Managed to keep it on the mantelpiece for a full year now so I reckon the Mrs shares my iconic thoughts. 🤕

I will be getting back to the U505 build as soon as the weather makes its mind up. (I only build/paint in the winter months)

Thanks again for your appreciation.

Andy.
