JWM
I think red was more frequent option for code lettering then black, especially on desert schemes. Actually I do not remeber any wxample for black lettering... Cheers J-W
Graham Boak
I think of red as fairly uncommon for codes on desert schemes, or indeed anywhere away from night operations and the FAA. Most desert units seemed to use light colours, but there certainly were black. I vaguely recall Torch Spitfires (UM codes?) and some P-40s (CV codes?) Whether that's any guide to their use on DC-2s is another matter..
JWM
I remember Hurricane IId JV-Z with red Z . Some examples i googled (ok, they are all bombers...) More rare is black - now I have found it on Maruder only But on typical (before Douglas era) forl Middle East transport machine like Vickers Velentia it is red BTW - it would be nice if some company would do Valentia as injection kit! mhaselden
I'm generally skeptical of colour profiles. Too many of them indulge in wishful thinking when it comes to colour allocations.

Then again, I am just a boring, bluff old traditionalist! Edited July 24, 2018 by mhaselden
