1/48 Kinetic Harrier T4 **FINISHED**

Recommended Posts

Coming on board as by happy coincidence i was starting this kit when i noticed the Hawker Siddely GB. The kit is Kinetics recently released two seat first generation Harrier which ill be building as an RAF Germany T4 in the wrap around green/grey scheme.

I have the newly released Eduard interior, exterior and mask sets. I had made a small start on the kit before pausing to await the arrival of the PE, this amounts to a start the main wing, ejection seats and LRMTS nose, certainly less than the 25% threshold.

Welcome to the GB Muzz. As a massive fan of the Harrier I'll be paying particular attention to your progress with this one and all that extra goodies, partly to find out what that complicated origami exercise on the mid right side of the exterior sheet folds up to become, have a need for this kit in my stash so you may convince me the Eduard stuff should join it depending on how you get on.

Cheers Col. I could tell you what it is now but I don't want to spoil the surprise. You won't have to wait long to find out though.

First up is something that never feels right when the details reasonable, getting rid of the raised detail on the IP's and side panels to make way for the PE.

The kit details not bad although the raised dials etc on the IP's is probably a bit too subtle and would be difficult get the most out of them by painting.

Well as usual with me and PE some of it went smoothly and some was a comedy of errors but it turned out fine in the end.......

And here you go Col, it's basically a bunch of boxes.......

Time to tackle the intakes, bad memories of the Hasegawa intakes on their Harrier's. I like the way these go together though, some though has gone into these. Option of open or closed auxiliary doors, I'm going for open it'll be sitting idle with no crew.

The part on the left if built up, on the right is the inner intake face, the main intake and the part with the auxiliary doors, some small ejection pin marks needing taken care off on the doors and the inside intake faces.

Looks like an interesting project with lots of PE techniques to view and study. Being a fairly old school modeller, I’ve not quite convinced myself that PE is worthwhile, however will agree it certainly lifts the overall kit to new detailed heights. I’ll watch on from afar if you don’t mind, I might even pick up some tips and change my point of view?

.. Looking great so far I might add, Muzz!

Cheers.. Dave.

It’s not always my friend Dave but definitely has it’s uses, I don’t think I’ve ever used a whole set and will often leave stuff out if it looks like it’ll be more bother than it’s worth. The Eduard web site and Hannants let you look at the instructions for the sets so I always have a look to see if there worth buying first.

Been cracking on with the cockpit, not finished but not far away.

Test fit in the fuselage, good fit. Strangely, a perfect fit on the starboard side but not quite on the port side, can't work out if its the kit or the PE parts getting in the way.

Cracking stuff going on here.

I have bèen trying to find this kit for a while so will be watching closely.

Remember to point out the obvious issues so we don't all make them later.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement with regards to the progress so far. Lots done today working on the undercarriage bays.

Nose wheel bay parts painted up and ready for assembly....

Also got the fan blade and intake trunking painted up and joined together. The instructions loom for you to cut the intake trunking in half and add the parts to the separate fuselage halfs, I decided to skip this as I'm confident it will fit as one piece.😓

Fitting the front gear bay in place, the parts build up in to two separate main parts. The instructions have you fitting the smaller part below the cockpit and the larger part to the cut in half section of the intake trunking. I decided to do things differently and fitted the larger part in place first without attaching the intake trunking.

The fit is surprisingly good for what is quite a complicated shape.

As seen from the other side, the same part incorporates part of the intake inner side wall.

Main undercarriage bay and airbrake.

The part in the above photo on the extreme left needed a small amount of detail removed from each side to provide the correct fit but other than that it goes together well.

All the extra parts you've fitted from the etched metal set have integrated well and your thoughts on straying from the construction sequence look to be paying off. :goodjob:

Cheers Col.

The fuselage is now together, I joined the front fuselage first with the nose gear bay and fan blades/intake trunking in place.

I then slotted the main undercarriage bay in through the opening for the main wing and joined the rest of the fuselage together with the main gear bay in place. This worked well for me and I'm impressed with the fit of the kit, it's starting to look like sexy beast!

The Harrier T-bird certainly was a long beast. Has an asthetic charm all of it's own though. Good to see it going together smoothly for you Muzz :speak_cool:
