1/7nd AFV's, what's the attraction

Hi all.

Wasn't sure where to ask this question. If I don't get any answer's I'll post in the armour section.

Please don't take offence, I'm not here to criticise 1/72nd AFV builders

I have been taking great interest in the 1/72 armour and the threads of ongoing builds. And I had to ask myself - "what's the attraction of 1/72nd".....I mean I have a hell of time meeting the detail demands of 1/35th......is it the scale and the challenge.........I can just about see 1/48th at a push......STILL SMALL....:worry:

So any response from the 1/72nd gang would be welcome.

Regards

Simon.

Many of us cut our teeth on Airfix 1/76 (HO/OO) AFVs. There were no 1/72 1/48 or 1/35 kits as competition - well not in Woolies. Then there's the space question - you can't fight a war in the big scales.

There has been a shift in the culture too. Modelling was building your own toys to play with. Yes we played with them (all those working features). Nowadays its an art form.

I'm getting old, and my eyesight is getting worse - after starting out bad - so 1:72 is more of a challenge.  I'm stubborn like that; not planning to let anything stop me from enjoying the part of modelling that most appeals - trying to miniaturise a subject convincingly

To me, that is a big attraction of the smaller scale, I don't feel obliged to meet those same detail demands. yes I know some do &  each to their own but for me (aircraft too) I can make one up without getting into hyper detailing, plus they're cheaper to buy, smaller to display but can still make a nice show.

I'm a newcomer to the world of 1/76 to 1/72 AFV's so I can only speak for myself - but for me it' all about 'fun'.  I've actually been looking for more naïve kits - to see what I can add to them - rather than the ultra-detailed resin kits that you can get.  I've been majoring on PSC kits - which have very little detail - but they do come with 'toy soldiers' and as Ratch says - it takes you back to when you were a kid - 'playing war'...

There is always the thrill of the 'money shot' too - in 1/76 - it's a 1p piece ;)

...but never forget - don't take things too seriously - this is supposed to be fun after all - or as Mrs X says...

...give it a go - it's fun :D

Mostly its display for me.  I do not have the space to display many 1/35 kits.

But I do build the odd 1/35 kit when the mood strikes me.  Mostly old Tamiya or Italeri.

Then there is also the cost.  A new release 1/35 kit can be getting on for £50 in the UK, and that is too much.

There is also the shear breadth of coverage.  1/72, 1/76 and 20mm have got it covered, if you look hard enough.  And there is a choice in detail level and construction material, of the subjects you want to build.

If you want to build all the cruiser tanks that served in the desert, then it will have to be 1/72, 1/76 or 20mm.  Or all versions of the Vickers Light tanks (A, B, C and AA?)

I find 1/48, 1/56 and 15mm a bit of a distraction, same old candidates in a different scale.

Well Gent's, that say's it all.....I can understand the attraction from one's younger days.........I cut my teeth on 1:35 Tamya, so hence my love of Tamiya now........

I hear you too on space for display....most probably for me a long negotiation with the other half to display them when I'm done.....boy do I need a man cave......:D. My big thing is the after market PE set's and from what i can see, they are not as prevalent in 1:72 -76th (there again, I don't think my eye's too would take the strain if they did).

Thanks for the repay's,

Regards, and happy mini modelling....

Simon.

There's a lot of AM around - it just takes a little bit of finding.

Tracks and Troops webstore is a good place to start.

Also recommend Dan Taylor modelworks and Part who make some excellent sets.

I started a 1/72 Revell Panther Ausf A build on here a couple of years ago that shows some of the range of things on offer. Really must finish it off!

All the best

Ben

Interesting question! I am about to venture into entirely unknown territory, as I await delivery of a 1:72 scale Katyusha rocket launcher. Never been near any AFV in this scale, so we shall see!

Which kit Clive?

For my 1/72 overview needs, I use Henk's site, it lists everythinghttp://henk.fox3000.com/index2.htm

For specific reviews I tend to use OTW! although it's a bit out of date at the moment: http://www.onthewaymodels.com/

I've used this image a lot recently:

That doesn't actually include any aftermarket.....But you can get plenty if you really want it!  ;)

Hi Clive, how are you. I'd forgotten I'd opened this question. I'm tempted too to have a look at 1 1/72. I'm not sure though. I enjoy the PE work on 1/35 and in 1/72 seems a more painful endeavour for the sake of pain; take a bit of the fun away. Unless making it as small as you can is your thing......each to their own.

Nice looking piece Sgt. That must have taken some patience.....😬......might be beyond mine which is has it's limitations.....😁. I think I'm a 1:35 Chappy for my sins.

Cheers all.

Oooh - that's a bit nice. Can see this arriving on my doorstep in the near future!

I'm sure the cage armour will be a bit challenging, but that's what makes it interesting/rewarding for me.

Not mine sadly, that's from the Modelcollect site.  ;)

I do have the kit and it is.....Mindbendingly good!  The cage armour is excedingly complex, it's modular in design and each module features a plethora of parts, definitely not for the faint hearted and specialised tools are a must.  There's a pretty comprehensive interior in there too, while it's not quite as detailed as the outside it does include the turret basket and so on.

They do a couple of versions IIRC, but I believe they are all pretty good, potentially a bit tricky here & there, so it's worth test fitting everything a few times more than you might otherwise do.....Depending on your chassis I may be able to back you up with spares and so on, PM me if I can be of any help.  :coolio:

Oh, OK mate......still nice. I imagine still a nightmare to make...........my neighbours can hear me screaming doing 1:35 photoetch......:swear:. So I think I'll have to leave this 1:72 world to more dedicated (with better eyesight no doubt too.....:nerdy::laugh:

I may add a voice coming from a different perspective: being an aircraft modeller, 1/72 tanks make for an interesting diversion from my usual subjects. I would not be able to justify the cost and the complexity of a 1/35 kit but building a 1/72 one OOB is something that I enjoy quite a lot. And being in the same scale of most of my aircrafts, these kits also give me some interesting diorama potential.

Yes, I can't disagree on the cost and complexity for 1:35th, but the detail I can get if I wish on 1:35 like adding a padlock on a tool box has it's appeal....for me anyway.

The one I have (delivered this lunchtime, yippee! :) ) is the BM-13 on a Chevrolet lorry. I've had a quick look at the box contents, looks like some good quality mouldings.
