Question for the Abrams experts

Hey,

I was looking at the new Tamiya M1A2 Abrams kits that were released last year in different scales and these all use the same paint scheme: flat sand.

Have these vehicles ever been painted in the three-tone NATO camouflage, for instance? Or any other scheme, for that matter?

Many thanks in advance!

Cristian

One of the decal options in the Flyhawk 1:72 scale M1A2 is in the NATO three-tone scheme, the newest Academy 1:35 kit has an option for a vehicle in Germany last year that was mostly in the single-tone green scheme with some parts (lower hull, running gear, CROWS, etc.) in sand and both Trumpeter and Dragon have released kits with markings for National Training Center vehicles from the 1990s and early 2000s in sand with a bit of green over it in a camouflage pattern (the latter had a photo of the actual tank on the box...not sure if they were OPFOR vehicles or not).

And thanks to both of you, I now have 2 Meng BRONCO 1/35 XM153 CROWS Remote Weapon Systems on their way to me!

Weren't a few painted in an AUSCAM scheme of green/black/tan for the Australian procurement trials a while back?

Edit: Found a pic

And a paint plan

There wasn’t a “procurement trial” of the Abrams - they were bought off the shelf. Originally they weren’t even going to be painted camouflage, rather left in the CARC sand and fitted with Baracuda camouflage panels [these failed testing].

The Tamiya 1/48 & 1/16 M1A2 kits are “straight A2s” - they aren’t SEP like the examples in NATOflage fitted with M153 etc. These tanks also have an different-shaped piece of equipment in the bustle rack [VCSU vs. EAPU] Apparently some “straight A2s” stationed at Fort Knox were painted in NATOflage, as per Dragon’s original M1A2 kit from the 1990s.
