Retired with time!

Parrish

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

im 58 taken early retirement and bought myself a few models as a job lot, approx 200.

before I start on them I was wanting some feed back to see if any are worth keeping as they are , that is in the box, or if any of them are of special interest.

Im a new modeller returning to my childhood passion and hope to while away some evenings.

Comments welcome.

regards

Steve

Hello and welcome.

Flaming heck! 200!? That should see you right for a few years - you could spend a year just doing those Superfortresses

They're all pretty elderly so you might find the fit a bit frustrating in places or the detailing a bit rustic but you've a few unusual/rare(ish) in there. A good guide is to search on somewhere like kingkit.co.uk. If you have any that you find surplus to requirements the 'for sale' section of the forums will no doubt find you a few takers

Welcome to BM, and welcome to retirement (it's great).

Wow, instant stash! As Lost Cosmo says, they all look quite old kits and some I've not seen before so mush be reasonably rareish. I built a few of the Airfix ones when I was a lad, but none of them since, I should imagine that they won't be the easiest kits to build. A lot of it would depend on the work you intend to put in to getting to them to the standard you are happy with, I've seen some stunning models made form some of these kits. I would advise you not to start with the vacforms or the resin kits. That lot should keep you busy for a couple of lifetimes.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think you need to get to 100 posts (or 100 feedback) before you are allowed to sell on BM, but if you don't know what a particular kit is worth, then an auction site would be better anyway.

Have fun.

£200? You was robbed! And you need to give one of those Backfires to a good home straight away:wicked:.

Seriously, you have done well there. Some gems among that lot, and will definitely keep you going for a while.

And welcome to the funny farm forum. You will get lots of help and tips from the inmates members. Just ask.

The 100 meaningful post rule does apply to buy and sell areas (chat posts don't count in your totals).

Hello Steve ... :welcome: Both to Britmodeller from the USA, & back to model building in general. Like the others have said great looking purchase and instant stash. Im not familiar with kingkit personally. However i agree it is probably best to see if there is real value in some of these before building them. I would be quite happy to have the B-36 in my stash. Please if nothing else happens with them, enjoy building them all.

Gorby,

i think retirement is going to be initially difficult as I’ve been a very active worker, looking forward to it, however never done it before ha ha.

I agree those vacforms and resin kits seem to require additional if not different modelling skills.

im sure my skills will increase with every model, I’ll start with some simplar kits and progress with time.

advice will certainly be much sought on this forum I’m sure.

Hello Steve

Some good ones in there.

There are more modern releases of several of them so I would have a look through some of the on-line collectors sites to see if any are of value.

I see a few 'Merlin' ones in there. I'll say no more!.

Hi Steve , I`ve been retired 17 years and if , like me you are on your own (with a barmy Black Labrador) you will

need those kits to stop you climbing the walls . All the best in your life , part two ! .

For kits to be collectable often as not it's the box, and it's condition.

Some of the older Airfix and Frog kits are desirable, like the Red Stripe Airfix boxes (eg Battle kit)  and the Frog Skua type box.

The Airfix  Bristol 192 looks very old,

But the SR 53 looking closer maybe a eastern European 'clone'  of the Airfix  kit...

I've not run across  A&V resin before.

There are sites that specialise in this kind of information.

airfix box types

http://www.vintage-airfix.com/airfix-packaging-styles-type-a-10.html

Frog

https://www.modelkitcollecting.com/frog-box-types-t477.html

no pics but they are out there

Kingkit have a massive stock,  and are on the high end of pricing, sojust because they have kit X at £15 doesn't mean that's what it's worth.

Ebay is funny,  but the advice there is try to end auctions on a sunday afternoon/evening,  and gamble by having a low starting price,  as that gets bidding wars going.

As that whats worth keeping.... depends on what you want from a model. As has been pointed out, most  are fairly old,  and many have been superceded by new kits,   though the Academy B-29 AFAIK is still the best option,  the Monogram B-36 is the only B-36.

Some are basically useless, for example the Airfix IL-2 Stormovik,   OK for the mid-60's when information was scarce, but crude and very inaccurate, same for there old tool Defiant.

But... perhaps acceptable for pratice kits that can be dumped if all goes wrong.

Or,  if you like a challenge,  try accurising them...  there are folks here who specialise in turning pigs ears in silk purses...

like this Airfix IL-2 by @AdrianMF

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234916059-airfix-il-2-sturmovik-the-hard-way/

And, there are plenty of all-singing all-dancing new tool kits that can be got cheap...

There is lots of information out there on the net,

Scalemates is a good source for tracking kits origins, and reboxings.

And there are plenty of helpful folk here.

A final word of caution,  Britmodeller can be addictive....

dinner calls

cheers

T

Wow can't believe how many I've built over the the years plus quite a few I still have.

There's a few that need binning like the Battle plus a few I want like the Frog Beaufort. Enjoy!

On the other hand, retirement at 58? I'm 58. I envy you. I don't have a job anymore being a stay at home Dad, yes I left it late. So no money, no pension, no days off. No time to reduce my stash either.

Maybe when I'm 68!

There are a few there that I'd put into a box in a dark room.

The B-36

The Airfix E-3D Sentry (This version has the correct engines for a RAF version). (I think)

The bagged FROG kits (I'd probably put aside the original FROG boxed kits too)

Airfix Bristol 192, Anson and Dakota (red stripe kitboxes)

Matchbox Lightning

Revell He162 & Hayate (1960's kit boxes)

All of the above have some value, get enough posts on here and get your money back in a year or so.

There may be others there worth saving, I'm not sure about the Russian stuff.

Pick out the newer/rubbish Airfix and use them for practice.

Welcome to the forum.

There is no cure!
