How are you progressing with your build of this kit? Yesterday I didn't get too much time to work on this but I did do some bits and pieces. First off I finished painting the pilot figure. I've tried to over-emphasise some of the features as he's only going to be seen through the canopy and don't want him to look too nothing behind the plastic: I then glued the seat and spar unit into place: You can see in the photo above I used black electrical tape to secure the wires to the motor so they cannot move around too much. I then took some photos to show the cockpit detail because when the pilot and canopy are in place very little of this will be seen: Next up I assembled the tail section parts: Then I glued the main lower wing section to the spars: And finally a test fit of the upper wings: Not as much done as I had hoped but progress is progress. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix Edited April 16, 2018 by PlaStix
modelling minion
Great work Stix, this is going to look at least as good as your FW-190 does. The Airfix Hurricane is a very nice kit isn't it and seeing your build makes me want to add another to my build list.

This is the first of the new Airfix 1/48 Hurricane kits I have built although I have another 3 in the stash. I don't think it will be too long before I build another! The pilot was a bit tricky to get to fit the Hurricane (his legs are moulded in such a way that they do not fit in the pedal area at all - perhaps I should have removed the pedals!) which seems a bit odd to me. But he should look okay under the canopy. 18 hours ago, Blitz23 said: Looks great so far stick, I think this GB has confirmed I will be building another to go with my existing Hurricane, brilliant looking aircraft! Hi Mark and thank you - most kind. I will look forward to seeing your Hurricane build in progress. Hoping I get chance to do more on this at the weekend. Had the same issue with a couple other Airfix kits lately and have to say it's bloody annoying; smacks of shoddy workmanship and lacking attention to detail All parts of the kit should fit together rather than some be thrown in as a token afterthought.

Hi Col. Yeah it does seem pretty poor. They obviously have a standard moulded figure which they drop into their kits either not checking to see if it fits okay or just not caring. Well this is where I am as of this morning: The wing tops have been glued in place and all the smaller parts have been cleaned up ready for painting before being assembled. I haven't started work on any of the clear parts yet. I still need to attach the rear, lower, fuselage section (with the support tube) but the wiring needs sorting first: I have now filled the slight gaps at the root of each wing using Squadron White putty: There is still a bit of cleanup required. Finally I have drilled and cut out the insides of the ends of the exhausts: Hopefully I will get on to some painting tomorrow. Comments and suggestions welcome. This morning's progress: Wiring installed and rear lower section, with the support stand through it, fixed in place: Various other parts painted and weathering started: Undersides given two thinned (with water) coats of acrylic Humbrol 90 applied with a flat brush: I need to do a little bit of tidying up around the wheelwell but these areas are now ready for some light weathering. I also started some work on the base but no photos of it yet. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix

Hi Craig. Thank you for your comments. The Humbrol 90 did go on well - it's a nice paint to brush on. Next job over the weekend was to get some very thinned Revell Gunship Grey painted, with a very fine brush, in and around all the detail - panel lines, etc on the undersides. Once dried I did some light dry-brushing with a lightened version of Humbrol 90: Next it was time to paint the upper surfaces. I used thinned Revell Dark Earth - applied again with flat brushes: I also did a bit of work on the display base: I'm just going to have some grass mat in the middle area. Finally I applied some very thinned Revell Anthracite in and around the details on the upper surfaces before doing some light dry-brushing over them: Green camo areas will be next. modelling minion
More nice work Stix. The wash and highlighting on the undersides has worked very well they look great. I think the base looks just right for the size of the Hurricane, a good choice.

MarkSH
This is really top class modelling, I'm still amazed at the paint finish quality. Considering I spent an hour cleaning my sputtering airbrush yesterday, tonight its going to get a good talking to and I'll make sure I've got some of your work to hand and point out the potential consequences of any further misbehavior. Excellent stuff

Thank you for your comments. I wasn’t sure about the base for this one - whether to go for this size or one smaller but the smaller one I've got just looked too small. Hopefully it'll be okay. I must admit I do enjoy building these aircraft when it's possible to fit a motor inside. This one took a bit of fiddling about to get it to fit but nothing too bad. 8 hours ago, MarkSH said: This is really top class modelling, I'm still amazed at the paint finish quality. Excellent stuff You are way too kind Mark, but thank you. I have to say I am sometimes envious when I see the paintwork and effects modellers with airbrushes can achieve but it does sound like there is a bit more work with the equipment than there is with the hairy sticks. A lot cheaper too with hairy sticks..........more to spend on the kits!! Over the past few evenings, now it’s lighter, I have managed to do a bit more on this project. Camo applied. Thinned acrylic Humbrol 30 over which I dry-brushed Humbrol 116: I've now fitted some of the parts to the underside plus painted the red patches on the front of the wings. A few test photos with it on the base: This evening I have given it all a coat of Pledge Multi-Surface wax (new version of Klear) ready for, hopefully, applying the decals tomorrow. PlaStix
Late yesterday I got it sprayed with Humbrol's matt varnish and the exhausts fitted: You can probably also see; I have drilled the holes for, what I assume, are the radio wires: I have also just about finished painting the framing on the windscreen and canopy, fitted the pilot, painted and fitted the gunsight plus drilled out, painted and fitted the wingtip lights. Still got a bit to do but it's coming along. Kind regards, Stix

Thank you Ozzy. Yes I remember your dynamic Hurricane scene - shame the PB fiasco has robbed us of the photos in your thread! Final update for today. I thought I ought to include some photos of the pilot before he disappears under the plastic of the canopy: I managed to find some suitable decals for the prop in an Italeri Hurricane kit I forgotten I'd got. These are quite noticeable in photos of the actual aircraft - even in flight. I have also fitted the windscreen - you might be able to spot the mirror mounted on top. The kit doesn't come with one but it is quite a noticeable feature of the real aircraft - so I fabricated one from strips of styrene: There's still a bit more to do but it's getting there.
