Have just been to see the Darkest hour,a very good film I thought, however they had Churchill going to see the French leader in an RAF marked Dakota, the film is set in 1939.Now I know this is probably incorrect and I was wondering what would the aircraft have been in reality.I was thinking maybe a DH Hertfordshire or something similar. What do you reckon?

Chamberlin went to see Hitler at Munich in a Lockheed Electra.

For a shorter trip such as Paris, perhaps a de H Rapide.

Whats a DH Hertfordshire ? That's a new one on me.

Percival Q.6 was used by the RAF . Its almost certain this aircraft bought General De Gaulle to England in secret when France was falling

Should have added that de Gaulle and his family were evacuated by de H Rapide.

Perhaps that's why he always took against us.....?

I saw a newsreel of this the other week, it was a low wing twin engine 'plane. The guys that are rebuilding a Q6 had the flying log book and it went to France "empty" and came back "empty". When France was falling this plane made 2 flights with "nothing" aboard it. Same date he came to England and to and from the area of France where De Gaulle was.

I am sure somewhere I have photo of a DH95 in France when Churchill went over with one of the escorting Spitfires in the background. The name Hertfordshire applied to one aircraft, R2510, that differed from the Flamingo in its window arrangement. Civil Flamingos were impressed and the ones used by Churchill were the prototype and two ordered, but not delivered to Jersey Airways. I think the impressed aircraft kept their Flamingo name

 Edit

Just found the photo, it is on Page 26 of 'Spitfire at War' and the caption says it was taken on 16th May 1940. 92 Squadron provided the escorting Spitfires on that occasion.

There is also a photo on page 74 of the 'The Spitfire Story' that shoes the Spitfires with the front of the Flamingo just visible behind the Spitfires.

Churchill generally used a DH Flamingo when shuttling back and forth to France.  After he became PM in May '40, that is.  Here's a link that might interest you.

Gingerbob,

Fascinating article! Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. Regarding Berwick- wasn't she painted in EDSG/DSG over sky? If we ever get a 1/72 injected 314 Clipper, Berwick is my first choice- a beautiful flying boat in a beautiful scheme! I think that makes her the only aircraft type  that was used by the leader of two different nations.

It’s 1/144 and fitted into their civil airliner range.

Very interesting link, however there is a phrase which make me doubtful:

"Allied leaders in Washington and Ottawa in January 1942, Churchill made his first flight across the Atlantic aboard Berwick, a Boeing 314A flying boat[7] painted in olive drab camouflage with large Union Flags under her cockpit windows. "

The photos shows TSS:

Znalezione obrazy dla zapytania boeing 314 berwickPodobny obraz

Momebers of Polish Goverment on excile (ie. in London) during WWII (or General Chief of Army)  uses besides LB 30, Flamingo, C-47 also DC 2, not mentioned as yet here.

That's a not unreasonable statement, as the equivalent US colour for the Dark Slate Grey in the TSS scheme was Olive Drab ANA 613.
