1/72 Airfix Harrier GR.3

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies & Gents,

I have entered a buddy build on Facebook that has been organised by a chap called Martin Lamont, it is called the "Hawker Harrier 50th Anniversary Buddy Build".

Now I want to build a variant of all the types of Harrier flown by the RAF and RN, i would like to build these in the order that they entered service.

So after building the Harrier GR.1 that can be found on here, I decided to enter the 1/72 Airfix Harrier GR.3 into the buddy build.

Here are the traditional box, instructions and sprue photos:

So that is the introduction to the build, I will post up the same updates here as I am doing on the buddy build. And to start that off I did a bit of video for you.

Thanks for looking and all feedback is welcome!

Will you be correcting the tail fin? I used the freightdog replacement and it was pretty much a seamless drop-in for the kit part.

I have one in the stash. What's wrong with tail fin as I know nothing of Harriers?

As I understand it, and I'm no expert, the height increased when the RWR was fitted.

I found another thread on here with more detail post #11: looks a relatively simple fix so I may try that once I've used up my Freightdog ones

I'm probably just going to build it straight OOB I think it will look like a Harrier GR.3 enough for me. I have seen the replacement by freight dog and it does look good, but I think I will be happy with the way Airfix designed the kit.

Quite right too.

I think the height thing is a marginal issue. I'm quite sure I have other kits which are out by more than a millimetre in any given direction, plus my assembly skills are none too precise.

Will be watching this build and learning. I have a airfix BAe Sea Harrier FA2 to build, mine will be a fun build I think. Looking forward to seeing more.

As far as I am aware they are very different toolings, I also have the Airfix SHARs in the stash, the FRS.1 will be the next Harrier build after this one.

So I have been beetling on with the little Airfix GR.3, so far I must say it as nice as its older brother the GR.1, part from I had some major issue getting a good fit and closure of the two fuselage halves. Probably caused more by me than the kit seeing I did not have any issues on my previous GR.1 build.

I also have some photos showing the build progress:

I painted the driver using some Tamiya acrylics with their retarder (Thanks Phil for telling us about it), they brush lovely once a drop or two retarder mixed in:

I also brush painted the cockpit tub:

But as I sprayed the air intakes (port Dark Sea Gray and starboard Dark Green), I decided to give the cockpit tub a quick airbrush too!

After the mess of trying to the fuselage halves together I had to fill the seam, I did this with CA mixed with talc powder I think this is a great filler:

Hi guys,

I have been cracking on with this build, I will be uploading another video soon. In the meanwhile I have some photos to show you the progress made on the Harrier GR.3.

So we are nearly at the stage where I can get her into primer, once that is done I'll need to check my filling and sanding on the centre fuselage seam.

Thank you for looking.

Interested reading that you use talc as filler, not thought of that - what is CA though? Would talc mixed with liquid glue work?

CA is Super Glue. I believe that the talc acts like a 'kicker', something to do with OH ions.

I mix the cyanoacrylate (superglue)  with the talc to form a paste. It dries relatively quickly but still gives enough working time. It sands very easily afterwards but not best for rescribing. I can do a quick video on it if you would like?

Is that a better option than normal household filler, then?  I used to use that years ago and it was OK.  Will soon be starting my first serious kit in 20 odd years and interested in picking up hints and tips as I go..

I don't think that there is one option that is better than the other really. I probably would not use normal household filler, I would use modelling filler like squadron putty or perfect plastic putty from deluxe materials, I also use home made sprue goo (dissolved plastic sprue in tamiya extra thin glue, I also use my CA and talc putty. each one of these have advantages and disadvantages, there are plenty of videos available on Youtube that talk about fillers youtube search here.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks Neal.  Never occurred to me there would be such a thing as modelling filler - don't know why!  When I used household filler you could certainly always tell where it had been used.

Talc bulks out the super glue, you are effectively forming a paste. It make sit easier to sand than regular CA. I've found it increase sthe setting time slightly, giving you more timne to work the mixture before it sets.

An alternative option is to use pigment, which gives much the same effect but has the benefit of adding colour to the mix, so you can see it on the mopdel

To bring you guys up to speed with the Harrier.

I masked up using some blutack and copydex glue:

I then sprayed the Mr Hobby DSG:

But when I took the masking off I found out that I had to do some touch ups:

I have also got the decals on and sealed it with a gloss coat on:

The Harrier is now ready for inspection, I’ll do a thread soon.

I notice that something has effected your grey paint. Was this caused by your Blue/ White Tac and Copydex. If so, how did you get rid of it as I was toying with the idea of painting Copydex on to produce 'hard' demarcation between colours?
