10 SQN RAAF P-3C, 1999 Anniversary Scheme

Recommended Posts

Must confess to not knowing about that anniversary scheme, very nice on those boring grey machines

as a side note it always amazes me that they have such low viz markings on these and even the new P-8's, who are they hiding from?

That is being built as well Bruce, well the second rendition of it for the 11SQN farewell. More involved as it has all the AP-3C lumps and bumps. I can build this one almost OOB.

Yes, this one flew under the radar Graeme, I have only seen one image of this aircraft and that was just the tail. Since my lad is at 10SQN now I thought I'd better build at least one 10SQN P-3.

And we are off

I started with the wings this time around (having built almost half a dozen of these now). I am going to give this one a war load as well and have added most of the weapons pylons

There was some flash to contend with

Engines got the treatment next, just basic assembly and clean up will come later

Props got some attention, more flash

And since they look a bit anaemic in back I have added some putty to fill them out a bit.

The excess will be tidied up and no doubt a little more filler required.

A great kit , I can understand why you have built a few. I didn't like the greys scheme but built a kiwi one in the white over grey about 15 years ago. Still looking forward to seeing this done with a splash of colour to the finish.

Had some time to work on the P-3

Engines attached and props assembled

The other engines on and fuselage removed from sprues and cleaned up

Started on the cockpit, I have an Eduard clour etch set, but not sure if I will use it at this stage

Some other bits cleaned up and assembled

Been chugging along with the Orion,

Added some etch to the cockpit

Added the cockpit to the fuselage

along with some nose weight and paint

and then it went together

with a bit of seam reinforcing

40469886332_68159752a1_o.jpg

and the wings found their way to the fuselage

40469885992_11f5e9b8e3_o.jpg

and some more putty was needed on the nacelles

This has been the easiest P-3 build so far, I suppose having and 5 under the belt has helped.

Next to clean up the seams and putty and see how it looks.

Thanks guys,

Not my idea original for the nose weight, saw someone else do the same with a Gunze/Tamiya bottle. So when the fuselage is large enough I try and reuse my empties.

Incidentally, the instructions suggested 30g of weight and the bottle was 33g

On it feet now and the weight was not quite enough

So I stuffed some more weight into the radome (I knew there was a reason I left it off before fitting the gear)

Then I added the antenna, the RAAF fit is slightly different to the USN version in the kit, I had to add one antenna and replace 2 others with a different sized blade, all were included in the kit. I also found one antenna called out as the wrong number in the instructions as well.

The only carpet monster casualty was the lower anticol beacon which I had to replace with some rod. Its funny, out of all the 5 P-3s I have built so far this is the first one where I added all the antennas as per the instructions ( well close enough).

Thanks, me too.

Fortunately, there will be one flying after retirement with HARS at Illawarra Airport (which is a couple of hours from here). So I will be able to get some T56 goodness from time to time.

There I was cruising along with this build and I realised when checking one of only 2 images of this aircraft in this scheme that it was not a vanilla P-3C. Turns out it had a few of the early mods that would eventually make it an AP-3C.

So out with the AP-3C conversion set and some other refs I have and it looks like some scratch building will be required to add some lumps, new wingtips and a bunch of antennas. This will actually help me with 1 or 2 future builds that will have the full AP-3C configuration. Another thing I have realised with the conversion set is that some parts are not quite the right shape which I will be able correct for this and the future AP-3C builds.

No mods yet, just the last picture I took prior to some puttying

Also one retiring to Caloundra ( out of hours)
