10 SQN RAAF P-3C, 1999 Anniversary Scheme

Recommended Posts

Goodness Ray, you are really cracking on with this one, I however just can't get interested in the Orion since some dropkick decided they should be grey on grey, when the USN at least gives all theirs real colour, the colourful fin might change my mind though.

So I decided to carry on to update it to the Project Air 5140 ESM update state.

I am using the AP-3C conversion set as a starting point for reference along with some pictures I have.

The wingtip is considerably different with the new ESM sensors

39734579105_61408f2de0_o.jpg

So I started with some thick card

39920054604_4305c87ef7_o.jpg

And did some shaping, and made up the other parts

26758999718_0a983cf50a_o.jpg

Then one side was assembled, it needs some tidying up

40588338632_b9f0618117_o.jpg

Next was the base fo the P band antennas, the base supplied in the conversion is not quite the right shape

39920054134_e0377be4f2_o.jpg

I then turned to the MBR antenna that lives below the tailplane

and after a bit of shaping and with still some more attention required

26758998408_af854b7c20_o.jpg

Next will be to fabricate the 6 blades for the P band set up and the 9 blades for the VHF/UHF antennas.

That antenna suite seems to have more aerials than out Nimrod R1s, well at least the ones that you could see externally. Well done with the work that you have carried out to achieve this.

Then I hit it with some primer

Not too many areas to sort out, just remembered I need to fit the HF antennas mounts as well.

You're showing real commitment to detail Ray :thumbsup2:.   Dusting this porcupine should be fun though!

Cliff

Cheers Cliff,

Fortunately, most of the 'quills' are underneath and should not attract too much dust!

I have added the last of the fiddly bits prior to painting.

The gear doors are on, along with the pitot, total air temp and angle of attack probes. I also repositioned the outboard nacelle drain masts and added a couple to each inboard nacelle

HF wire antennas attached.

A couple of shots with most of the other parts to go on after painting (except the entry door) in place.

When this lot dries properly I can get on with masking and spraying detail bits, like wheel wells, mad boom and nacelle intakes

  • 2 weeks later...

Been in and out of the paint shop with this one for the past couple of weeks.

Would see something that needed a touch botch it, fix it, botch it..... etc

Anyway, it is almost ready for a gloss coat and decals.  Need to sort out some stores as well.

It's coming together nicely Ray.  I had a private bet with myself that the antenna wires wouldn't survive the painting process - looks like I might have lost :D.

Nice work Ray.. How are you not going to break some of those antennas off during that paint/decal process

Thanks Calum and Cliff.

I have managed to survive so far. even dropped it on its gear at one point. No casualties so far :D

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been pottering away with this one, so close to finishing, yet so far.

I resprayed the props as I was not happy with the gunmetal section.

More decals have gone on and I have sprayed over the earlier applied grey ones with thinned base colour to tone them down.

Some intake blanks have been fitted and weapons painted. More decalling tonight I hope. Pictures to follow soon.

OK, some pictures.

I decided to add intake bung and RBF tags. First attempt with bungs was with Blutak

40877706604_6e915b5286_o.jpg

40877707064_4b6b490361_o.jpg

That did not work too well so I went with paper soaked in diluted white glue. these were painted up, though from the pictures some touch-ups are required

40877706204_8ee17bf8f6_o.jpg

Some more decalling done as well

40877705864_b895939547_o.jpg

26720589657_d1b33e40c7_o.jpg

40877705184_bc0b5ff82c_o.jpg

The roundel has been over sprayed with thinner base colour, the prop warnings have not, you can see how dark the markings are.

Some weapons were dug out of the spares box

26720591137_a4eaaf8509_o.jpg

That's it, some more data stencils to add. then tags and weapons to be loaded. Oh, and to fix the nose wheel that decided to separate from the gear leg.

Sorry Ray, completely missed this one. It’s amazing that when you don’t take part in a GB, you can possibly miss a heap of great builds. This P-3 has turned out really lovely - we’ll modelled.

Cheers.. Dave
