Recommended Posts

This will be my entry for this GB:

I won’t be starting it just yet as I've another GB project to finish first.

I will hopefully post some photos of the contents of the box and a bit of information about the actual tank itself soon.

Kind regards,

Stix

Come onto the Dark Side we have cake :D

EDIT: As time has passed there is a little less cake than there was, however I'm sure some will appear if required.

I agree with Bullbasket Im really looking forward to seeing this one get built.

On a different note i think for the Panzer IV AND Tiger Tank group builds i will stick to 1/48 kits. I really like them as they work well for my storage and cost issues.

Good choice Stix, I look forward to watching your progress.

I too am looking forward to building this kit - I had a quick look at the sprues in the box when I took the box photo and there really is some very fine detail included.

I'm already a big fan of 1/48 armour kits - my first was this one from Skybow:

Then one from Hobbyboss:

....and I'm also already a big fan of Tamiya's 1/48 armour kits:

Two from Tamiya and 131 from AFV Club:

LINK

....and these three from Tamiya:

If you haven't tried a 1/48 AFV kit yet then I can totally recommend all the kits above, but especially the Tamiya ones, as being really fun to build and really well detailed. So the type 10 will be my 12th 1/48 armour build and I cannot wait!!

Kind regards,

Thank you very much Steve - I am a really big fan of Tamiya's 1/48 armour - they are beautifully made and detailed. I have only made one of Tamiya's 1/35 kits so far - their newish Panther - and it was a fun build too.

....Easter presents? Next year's birthday present early? Won't be that long before it's Christmas again - so it might be worth getting it early? :wicked:;)

Top choice Stix.  I have a couple of 1/48 tanks in the stash but haven’t found the opportunity to build yet.  Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.

Dave

Thank you Dave. These 1/48 tank kits are usually rather good. I won’t be starting it for a while - although, when I took the photos of the box contents this morning, I was tempted to start it alongside my other GB tank build!

Okay - time for some photos of the box contents - everything except the instructions:

Main hull parts:

View of the very well detailed upper hull:

Photo to show how well Tamiya have modelled the flexible side skirts:

Photo of sprue which includes the upper turret part:

....which again is very nicely detailed:

and will, hopefully, show up well with some washes and dry-brushing.

More detail:

The kit includes a figure:

Two of these sprues:

Again they are nicely detailed:

......although there will be a bit of cleanup required on the insides of the tracks to remove the ejection pin marks:

Other bits and pieces:

Decals:

Tamiya include an information sheet:

Which includes a parts diagram:

I may get the sprues washed this weekend and then I could start some building when I get chance.

It does look like a great kit. Can't wait!

Kind regards,

Stix

I don't know how this measures up (size wise) against the likes of Challenger, Leopard and Abrams, but it has always struck me as being a bit unusual, the fact that this tank has just five road wheels as opposed to Challengers six and Leopard and Abrams seven.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what the hairy stick makes of it.

Hi John and thank you for your comments. As far as I am aware The Type 10 was designed to be a smaller tank so it could be tactically and strategically mobile. Most of Japan’s road system is built to accommodate smaller cars and trucks, and mountainous terrain often includes bridges with specific weight limitations. The Type 10 was designed to be smaller to comply with road laws and be small and light enough to cross some of the larger civilian vehicle bridges. Apparently this also makes it more suitable for air and sea transport - especially between the islands.

Hi Steve. I have to say I was very impressed with it when I opened the box.

It really is a great looking kit Stix.

The basket at the rear of the turret looks very good and I like the surface texture on the upper surfaces, all bodes very well.

Hi Craig. As I said to Steve, above, it really is a very impressive little kit.

Unfortunately I didn't get time to even wash the sprues this weekend - spent too much time on my Sherman build. I may try and get them washed one evening this week.

Kind regards,

Stix

Got go say it does look a quality kit, and another inspiring build and paint job to watch

Hi Glynn. I must admit it does look good although there's a few things I'm a bit disappointed with today as you'll see below - I'm sure it will be okay in the long run.

I'm along for the ride Stix   If I finish my Sherman in the next couple of weeks I may just have to find something for this GB too!!

Hi Nigel. Looking forward to seeing your Sherman complete and what you decide to build for this GB.

I have never really been tempted by Armour but looking at the quality of the contents of this kit that may change, very impressive.

Hi Mark. All Tamiya’s 1/48 kits a pretty good in terms of detail and buildabilty - this kit, I think, has a couple of issues compared to other's I've built but I'm sure it will build into a good looking Type 10 in the long run.

18 hours ago, stevej60 said:

Certainly look's a comprehensive kit Stix.

It certainly does - the detail is really good for 1/48.

Right. Bit of an odd start with this one. I got it washed in warm soapy water this morning and left it to dry while I carried on working on my Sherman GB build. When I got to a point where I was waiting for paint to dry I thought I'd make a start on this GB's project.

As soon as I cut off and looked closely at the parts for assembling the lower hull I noticed loads of ejection pin marks on the sides for the lower hull:

39896814142_452c5bb6c6_b.jpg

28149145189_be888924e6_b.jpg

I checked more parts of the kit for these type of marks and the whole thing seems to have rather a lot - these two parts  appear to be two of the worst! :

39896814982_25bdfea185_b.jpg

I know these areas will not be seen but even so there's more here than I'm used to seeing on most kit parts.

Now I know that the sides of the actual lower hull are hardly going to be seen, because of the wheels and side skirts, but the marks bugged me enough that I decided to remove them. That's when I realised the second thing that's unusual about this Tamiya kit - the plastic - to me - it seems a bit soft and marks/scratches really easily. Even gentle filing, scraping and sanding with the finest grade wet'n'dry left the surface scarred. I have managed to tidy them up but it took longer just to get the lower hull assembled than usual. I was even wishing this one came with a metal hull by this stage!

Once cleaned up I got the lower hull together - the fit was as good as other Tamiya kits - so that's something!:

28149140759_563e2670de_b.jpg

39896812562_6fb33ee607_b.jpg

The last thing I did on this was fit the weights in place:

28149139749_1a77b4d726_b.jpg

39896811262_f810d25566_b.jpg

I know the issues above are nowhere near as bad as on some kits but I was just surprised that they were like this on a Tamiya kit.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Kind regards,

Stix

Nice to see this one underway Stix.

I agree with you about the ejector pin marks, there does indeed seem to be a lot of them for a new Tamiya kit, as you say thankfully most are invisible after assembly.

I've managed to get hold of some stuff which I think might be useful to you (and other prolific AFV modellers) to replicate tow cables, drop me a PM with your address and I will send you some to see what you think.

Hi Craig. Yes I think it was just the fact I'm so used to Tamiya kits being pretty near perfect in terms of fit and finish (I know not always in terms of accuracy) that I was a bit surprised and disappointed with the issues above. I know they won't be a problem in the long run - just an irritation when I was looking forward to building this.

I'll be interested to see the stuff you've found. - I'll send you a PM in a moment.

Kind regards,

Stix
