billn53
For my last build of 2017 I choose Hobby Boss's "easy assembly" P-61A Black Widow: My goal was to learn a few weathering skills and replicate, as best I could, the appearance of this P-61: I built this almost entirely OOB. Total time from start-to-finish was a mere ten days, and it was completed with just a few hours before 2017 came to an end. The WIP can be viewed here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235031011-hobbyboss-172-p-61-black-widow/&page=1 Let the show begin! The RAF fuel bowser is from Airfix and the jeep from Hasegawa: Thanks for viewing!

Thom216
That's a beauty I'd love to be married to, even if I would be on ... 'borrowed time..!' datum dum!!
stevehnz
Seriously, seriously good. I was quite excited to see this come along & your build began & I wasn't disappointed. Other than the top of the fuselage sides, relatively easily fixed I reckon, this kit ticks most P-61 boxes to my eye, certainly your build shows it off wonderfully well. Steve. 72modeler
Bill, The finished product is outstanding! Aren't you glad you persevered with all the effort? I think you got very close to your reference photo with the weathering, and especially the overpainted invasion stripes. If you want to take this excellent build up a notch, might I suggest you ding up the prop blades a little? Especially since the Widow squadrons were based on the continent and frequently flew from unprepared air fields, those blades would pick up a lot of chipping from debris kicked up while taxying, landing, and taking off. Unless, of course, your P-61 just had replacement props installed! Well done, sir! I hope I can do half as well when the P-61B is released. Thanks for sharing the excellent photos and text with the rest of us. Mike
billn53
Thanks Mike! Yes, the props were the last items done and I should properly weather them. Looking at my photos I see a couple of other things I should attend to, also. But all in all this was a very satisfying build.
IanC
Fantastic. I love the Black Widow but feel it should have the turret on top (and be black), so I'm waiting for the P-61B!

I agree - it's a great effort. P-61B........... here it is (with better shape on top! http://www.72news.eu/2018/01/hobby-boss-northrop-p-61b-black-widow.html
billn53
That is good news! The fuselage shape looks spot on (as best as can be determined from a photo). I note that the nosepiece is on the same sprue as the turret so hopefully it is the correct longer nose appropriate for the 'B model. On the down side, the decals are still disappointing, so some aftermarket markings will be needed.
spiton
Good job. I like this plane. Very good weathering. Only the red lines looks to be too clear.
rob85
This is some cracking work! Looks ace! I’ve been looking forward to this kit coming out for ages, I now have one in the post! Rob
Oldone
Now that is some build, the detail you have put into it. It really is ace.

Except for the decals, and a couple of very minor items, it is straight out-of-the-box. All in all it's a very nice kit.

Yeah, in retrospect I should have applied the walkway decals before the major weathering. And, not atop the invasion stripes. Doh!
Habu12
Echo all the comments, except the nose is a bit stark white. I know it’s difficult to replicate half opaque fiberglass on a piece of opaque plastic though.
