HI All

So this is my Christmas pressie and I just couldnt wait to start it, plan is to put it on the same base as the trumpeeter Belfast that I am also building on here. TBH I plan on building this pretty much OTB as the Belfast build has tested my patience enough and I could do with something nice and easy, that plus the fact i just dont have anywhere near as much ref material to hand as I did for Belfast.

The kit looks really nice, so far I have tidied up a few blemishes to the hull with filler and cleaned up some of the bits that had either snapped off or just not cast at all. If that sounds negative its not! I have no idea how they cast the detail on the hull such as the vents etc, they look fantastic! I need to replace a few bits and the bulwark at the rear but its no big deal (If that was the only issue i had with Trumpys Belfast I would be a happy man.....) the quality of all aspects of the kit is top draw and i am looking forward to their next release of a river class frigate even if it did cheese me off a little when it was anounced due to the 60% scratch built one I now have sitting on a shelf thats unlikly ever to get finished.......

Plan is to run this alongsidel Belfast and aim to have them both finished and mounted on the base end Feb/march.25423603068_ab914a69f7_k.jpg38703077884_6e892ec11b_k.jpg27633968049_fe3621112a_k.jpg38532956485_772f3e5305_k.jpg

Do we modellers ever go the 'nice and easy' route? I doubt it, we always find something to tweak.

Bit more progress to report, I have decided to make her as HMS Rattlesnake in early 43 to link in with my Belfast, (no idea if they actually ever operated together)  got the main colours on the hull using colourcoats, also no idea how accuarte the choice of coloures actually is....... all the references I could find including the kit seemed to disagree! my interpretation is 507C for the hull with 507A and ms3 for the disrupters, everything above the deck edge will be MS4A,  Looks ok to me! deck is a non descript light greyish beige to represent semtex mixed from tamiya acrylics.

Draught marks and painting of the deck details next then a light touch of weathering me thinks.

Bit more progress to report, I have painted the deck bits n bobs and done a bit of weathering, i've also found a couple of really good photo's of Rattlesnake which show quite a few differences from the kit, too late to change some things but my out of the box build may end up being slightly more complicated than I thought....... but I am determined just to live with some of the differneces I have found as I really have enough on my plate with Belfast at the mo!

Hi

Thanks for all the kind words, I have managed to get the railings fitted (they still need painted and the deck paintwork touched up to cover paints spills and glue patchs) also got a few more more of the small assemblies tidied up and ready for paint.

The only issueI  really have is that the brass etch is a little too thin for my liking, in skilled hands its probably capable of great results but I suspect in my unskilled hands I may not get the best from it! I also seem to recall that the kit was advertised with a turned brass barrel? however there was non in my kit, not a big issue as i seem to have a surplus of suitable 4" barrells at the mo.

I am really enjoying this so far, I got it as a sidekick to go with Belfast and set out just to build it OTB as a relaxing interlude but will probably add afew bits to better match the photos I now have, however in the future I would consider getting another and spending some time getting the best from the kit (I already regret not adding plating runs which is noticable when in close proximity to Belfast)

The dio is coming together really well.

That seascape is looking spot on.

Give Mike a quick email at at Starling Model's regarding the barrel. I'm sure he'll sort you out.

OK Back to working on Rattlesnake for the next week or so and hoping to get most of the hull fittings done in that time. Managed to get a few of them painted and installed already and have some more in the painting stage now. TBH I really wish I hadn't just crashed on with this as it deserves better and i am now making comprimises that i know will niggle for ever more........ one thing I will change is the carley floats which are not actually mounted in the photos of Rattlesnake I have, that will teach me to simply follow intructions! there are a few simplications in the kit to make things fit nice and securerly but o/a the level of detail is impressive and its certainly  a kit I will build again (and the next time I will take my time!)

Hi Nick

In any future build I would at least add/modify the following. Dont take this as critisism of the kit its not I think the kit is great!

  • Add plating runs to the hull,
  • Most of the larger pieces on the deck have bases which slot into the hull casting, makes assembly a breeze but leaves large molding stubbs between the detail and the deck which in reality dont exist (look at the large winch to see better what i mean) In a future build I would fill the deck holes and seperate the parts to provide a better appearance.

Anyway enough of wht i will do to the next one I build heres a few more pics of last nights progress.

Nearly there! bridge and masts added (from brass rod soldered together) just need a few small fittings and figures along with the rigging to add so hopefully the next update will be added to the completed section!
