rob Lyttle
I haven't long finished the Academy F86E in 1/72, with separate slats. Very nice little kit. In fact, I thought it was just the E that had the slats. So I'd like to watch along, see what I can learn!😃 Looking splendid so far.
Tony Edmundson
The Academy E isn’t an E at all, just a reboxed Sabre 6 Tony
Plumbum
I added the wheel wells to the wings then attached the wings to the fuselage. Looks like I'll need a bit of putty in the wing roots and bottom.---John
Plumbum
The wing roots and bottom joint are puttied. Once it sets up I can sand it down. The fuselage in the background is a HobbyCraft F-86E, fuseage just glued up.---John
Graeme H
If you are doing the slats out, but not the airbrakes, are you going to put in a Pilot, so there is the illusion that it has the Engine running?
Plumbum
I like this pose, don't know why. The 3rd plane back is what Matchbox used as a model for their F-86A kit, Miss Louise. That red nose ring sticks out like Rudolf's nose! Thinking of buying the old Matchbox again or kit bashing and doing an A. I dunno, just like this pose for some reason.---John
Plumbum
The wing roots and bottom seams are all sanded. Time to add the horizontal stabilizers.---John

Does the Avon engine installation require mods? This bird is flying together in quick time! Looking forward to seeing the paint job.👍
Tony Edmundson
Avon ????? you mean Orenda time for this again; 1
rob Lyttle
Orenda ..... check Didn't somebody build 'em with an Avon fitted?
Tony Edmundson
Aussie Commonwealth built Sabres were equipped with Avon’s. Tony
Plumbum
I built the unit that goes in the rear of the canopy. HC instructions were worthless so I went to my Squadron/Signal walkaround book and Googled up some pictures on the web. I think it's pretty accurate now. Just need to paint it when the glue sets up. Will be a while before painting, need to order paint. Will putter around with drop tanks, wheels, misscelaneous parts till then.---John 1
Plumbum
All painted up and drop tanks assembled, need some sanding on the seams of the tanks.---John
Tony Edmundson
if don't already know, John, the tank/pylons should be installed at 33mm from centreline in 1/72. Nobody got that right except for F-86D model kits. Your Matchbox kit is on it's way Tony
Plumbum
Thanks, I got that drop tank dimension right once, no that might have been on the VooDoo. Don't remember. HC has them 41mm off center line.---John
Plumbum
Looks like a lot got it wrong, my new mold Airfix is also about 41mm and so is my Walk Around book!---John
Tony Edmundson
Correction, make them 35mm. It’s station 99 which is in inches on the real thing Tony
Plumbum
Is this a Canadair thing. Every NAA F-86 drawing I find scales out to 41 mm in 1/72 EXCEPT one GH drawing which shows 69-70mm center to center for the drop tanks, making them 34.5 to 35 mm off center of the fuselage.---John
Plumbum
New drop tank locations laid out. 70mm center to center of tanks.---John 1
Tony Edmundson
Nope, it’s not just Canadair, it’s all F-86s. Station 99 for drop tanks. Further inboard for the Fighter Bomber pylons., and further still for rockets. Take a gander at where Hawk One’s tanks sit—almost touching the gear doors, but they are Japanese wings. 99 inches x 25.4 mm/inch divided by 72=34.925mm Cheers, Tony
Plumbum
Yes you can see it here in this F-86F fighter bomber of the 35th FBS in Korea 1953.---John 1
Plumbum
Quote Or 99 inches divided by 72 equals 1.375 inches times 25.4 equals 34.92mm
Plumbum
I guess I can flip a coin, I've seen both style fins on GH Mk6 drop tanks. Looks like 2 different pylon shapes too. Either that or it's on different stations? 100 and 200 gallon tanks?---John
