Just read the announcement and I agree that the grammar lends itself to a special new tool rather than a singular new tool.

New Vulcan is my guess

You're all misinterpreting it... It's a 1/72 hammer :banghead:

OK, I remember during Telford on one of the forums, someone said  "I know what it is, and it's big and British" So here's my guess and it's one of two things 1. a 1/72nd VC-10 (Supposedly Airfix has been working on this for several years or 2.(which I actually think is more likely) a 1/350scale HMS Queen Elizabeth. Laugh if you will, but aircraft carriers sell. Anyway, just my two cents

Well, I certainly hope it's not yet another Spitfire (yawns!) or, even a Sopwith  camel!:P:D. Prefer not to speculate! Think I would rather sit back and wait.

Ok, its good fun nevertheless. Plenty things I would like to see and lots of things I won't see! Sure there will be something of interest though.

A 1/12th show jumper please 😁

I like the cut of your jib sir!

Maybe Airfix could re-release the 1/12 Show Jumper and Boy Scout in a Battle of Bosworth Field Dog Fight Double set? It would be worth it to see the outrage in the letters pages of Military Modelling magazine

Yep numbers from the 2017 Annual report.

The upshot is I guess Airfix makes good margin. Where as Slotcars don’t make as much.

Interestingly they sell more through national retailers in the UK than the independents. National retailers being toy shop chains, Argos etc...

Places I guess a enthusiast modeller possibly doesn’t shop.

More revenue is earned down that channel in the UK than ‘normal’ model shops..

So you have a part of a larger business that accounts for 12% of its revenue and of that the majority of sales are via national retailers to potentially non enthusiast buyers.

Would you focus your efforts on esoteric subjects???

Discuss..

Not really surprised by these figures. Airfix seems to have been in that range of revenue for a few years, guess that this is their spot in this era.

That they sell through national retailers is also not surprising, one of the things I've seen about Revell is that they are very present in national chains in their main markets, in the end business come in large part through these channels and securing contracts with big toy shop chains and similar is more important that making happy a couple hundred modellers on a forum...

Airfix revenue should always be kept in mind when we discuss the company and their position in the world. In a recent thread we pondered if Tamiya had to be afraid of Airfix, as the latest info I had found for Tamiya revenues were in the order of $ 100 million, I doubt they worry too much about Airfix. Of course Tamiya's revenues come from all kind of other products and plastic kits are a small part of this.

It should also put our idea of modelling into perspective: we all think of aircraft kits, sometime tanks and some even of ship and vehicles, we shout that Airfix should focus on this and that unusual subject or do '60s British aircrafts or cars but then looking at the revenues of modeling companies the ones that make the most money are those who make Gundams ! The almost $ 400 milion that Bandai makes with their sci-fi kits make Airfix revenues disappear in comparison

No the numbers nor the channel to market are not that surprising. Hornby exist to sell product.

I was a bit surprised that the 'non enthusiast' channel was as big in the UK as it is.  I guess unsurprisingly you get a tinted view on model forums that Airfix are striving to please the enthusiast and we're the sole focus of their working day. When the numbers would suggest that 'Aunt Mable' buying a starter set for a Birthday prezzie or WHY is a more vital part of the business mix.

Don't forget that it's the wrong mark and should have been the Mk 3.5 made at Cleckheaton Foundry and Aerial Carriage Company with conical rivets....:fool:

I confidently DO predict that styrene will feature unless a return to polypropylene as used for wargame series way back is considered.

Of course, these conical rivets will have been properly counted beforehand.................................................!!:D

You hope in vain my friend!! We all know that the announcement will then be followed by an immediate 40 page whine and whinge fest!:P:lol:!. I'm pretty sure I'll find something to keep me happy, even if it is just a reissue!! That's all I really ask for.

If they are to announce one other new kit then it will probably be a jet aircraft in 1/48 although l would prefer 1/72. Also the price point and model will have to be attractive enough for people to buy multiples, no point in producing a model that only a few would buy seeing that Hornby/Airfix needs a good cash flow.

It's interesting that while Revell is very well presented in toy shops across ex-USSR (together with Zvezda and some other CIS firms), Airfix is almost non-existent there. For example one of the recently opened general hobby shops in Minsk sells Revell, Zvezda, Modelist, Hobby Boss, Meng (!) - but no Airfix...

Airfix is still present in specialised modelers' shops along with other mainstream manufacturers - but not in toy chains for some reason.

Come on Paul, you know you can do better than that. A bit more effort required then you could rival Enid Blyton:penguin:
