Revell 1/72 scale P-51D Mustang H-47 from 1975

Recommended Posts

Just finished, my first completed model shown here on Britmodeller,

The kit's a bit ancient but I wanted to see how far I could go.

Revell 1/72 scale North American P-51D Mustang kit No. H-47 from 1975. Technically my third build of this kit, the others no longer survive, they were the classic H-619 red/silver CY-G "Millie P":ner: Firstly the box,

North American P-51D-5NA Sno. 4413571 WR-X "Texas Terror IV" of the 354th FS, 355th FG, Steeple Morden England, 1944 - 1945. As produced the kit represents the mount of Maj. L.G. Mendenhall who was rotated home to the US after completing his tour in this aircraft. Sno. 4413571 was lost along with it's new pilot a few months later when it ditched in the Channel after battle damage.
The kit's been fully panel lined and riveted, modified (Heller 75gal. drop tanks, Matchbox Mustang wheels to name a few) to make her look more like a Mustang, hence my name for the model, "Sorta Stang". More if you go to the build thread on the ATF (I'll provide a link), full of trials and tribulations but ultimately success!! . . . sorta ;)

This kit, H-47, is the slightly re-tooled Revell kit H-619 from 1963 that was initially issued in the outlandishly wrong red and silver colour scheme "CY-G - Millie P" (See also Revell kit no. 04148, the latest release) although iconic to a generation of modellers it is a very poor representation of a P-51 (of ANY mark) with lots of wrong all over, the only tooling difference I can identify is the deletion of the sliding canopy and it's slot behind the cockpit and replacement with a one piece canopy that is too wide, more on this later.
Disturbingly this kit has been released in 11 times in 10 guises from 1963 - 2010 , you'd think that Revell would retire the tooling after all that :speechless:

Regards all:yes:

OK - first things first, your modelling skills are certainly of the highest order and you have certainly raised this kit to another level.

It would be great to see you build an accurate 1/72 P-51 (say a Tamiya / Airfix etc.) in similar scheme and park them side by side.

Secondly, the phrase that comes to my mind is "It's like putting lipstick on a pig, no matter which way you look at it - it's still a PIG!".

Overall, very well modelled and I agree - Revell should have been ashamed of themselves to release this kit way back in 1963, let alone as recent as 2010?

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks for showing us this oddity.

This kit looks totally off, hardly bears any resemblence with the real thing.

It's almost a comic-like caricature of a Mustang, as you've already pointed out;

but your paint job and weathering looks really good,  you obviously invested a lot of time & work!

I agree with Rabbit Leader and Roman.  Some great modelling skills on display with a beautiful and authentic looking paint finish.  I'd really like to see them used on the Airfix kit.  This kit looks truly awful.  It sort of reminds me of one of those 2/3rd scale flying replicas or warbirds.  Even with the technology of the day it's hard to see how they got it so wrong.  Mind you, the old Airfix Spitfire IX was pretty awful too.  How can Revell justify having this in their catalogue, I wonder?  The Australian expression 'polishing a (you know what)' springs to mind.  Anyway, despite the poor basic canvas I'm well impressed with your work.

Nice to see these old kits being built once in a while :thumbsup2: things have certainly come a long way since the 60s - 70s.

Dispite the kits being way off accuracy wise they still hold a nostalgic value to lets say us older modellers who remember them first time around.

:goodjob:

Apologies for taking so long to reply gents.

Thank you all for taking the trouble to comment gents, I didn't expect to get that many for my "Sorta Stang":D

I'm amazed that my hard work has generated the very generous comments I have read!! :smile: Although I do not understand the "reacted to" heart thingy at all:wonder:

I could've sworn I included the build dates, Started 28Dec2016, Finished 19Nov2017, so around 11 months:worry:

Revell really should be ashamed of re-releasing this kit when they have the far better Matchbox Mustang molds.

Here is a list the boxings I know of;

H-619 (1963 as CY-G "Millie P", yes the red and silver one with the sliding canopy);

H-619:50 (same as above);

H-619:49 (and again);

H-47 (1975 as 44-14571/ WR-X "Texas Terror IV", this is the version I built, molds modded with the canopy in 1 piece, paddle bladed propeller and fuselage spine filled in);

H-666 (1976 as air racers with a airfield display base, not sure if there was one or two Mustangs in the kit, but I know it had two aircraft models);

Nr-4148 (1978 same as H-47 above);

H-47 (1978 again!!);

Nr-4148 (1980 again!!);

Nr-04148 (1994 AGAIN!!!);

Nr.40013 (2000 by Alanger as '7' Redtails);

Nr-04148 (2010 as 44-13762/CV-D "Cookie" sympathetically reviewed on Britmodeller here:

And finally, 50 years later:D

Nr-64148 (2013 :wtf: as 44-13762/CV-D "Cookie" in a "Model Set" boxing with paints and glue)

Rabbit Leader you are not the only one to refer to my "Sorta Stang" as a "pig with lipstick". I have a couple of new tool Airfix P-51Ds to do so you just may get your wish for comparison photos. I actually have a mint Revell H-619 boxing from 1963 to do OOB, red colour scheme and all. Then I'll do an Airfix P-51D in the correct version of the scheme:smile:

BTW, you guys will never see me build a Tamiya kit unless it's the 1/48 Dambuster Lanc I have in the stash or a 1/100 or 1/700 scale one that I also have in the stash.

I like mostly old kits (1/24, 1/32, 1/72 and below. I dabbled in 1/48 as a kid but decided it wasn't worth the trouble) as I actually have to use and develop my modelling skills to produce an OK model that I'm happy with (this "Sorta Stang" could've been better).

John W, monogram really did produce some "howlers" as you put it, but so did Airfix (original Fw 190D kit and the simply terrible new A-4B Skyhawk are two that leap to mind), Revell (this kit and the 1/144scale Stealth Fighter), Tamiya (1/100 scale F-104 and Mirage IIIC), Heller (1/72 Bf 109F), Hasegawa (1/72 scale F-104) and Matchbox (the very poor 1/72 A-4M Skyhawl II). Back in the 1970's when my club had it's annual "Poor Kit Show" it was inevitably won by an Aurora or Lindberg horror:worry:

Here's a few more pics of the "Sorta Stang", enjoy and thanks again,

Beautiful result, horrible kit.

I must have bought the 1994 rerelease when it came out when I was a kid. I remember being massively dissapointed at the not-Mustang shaped thing that came out of the box and the terrible decals that looked liked they'd already silvered on the backing paper.  Can't believe it lived on until 2010!

Sorry to scare you gents some more but this is where the Revell Mustang story started :yikes:

My third or fourth or even fiith build of this kit, two H-619 versions no longer exist bar a lone propeller blade, the previous build a few posts ago as kit H-47 link;
Revell-1-72-north-american-p-51d-mustan ... ml#p791047
This is how this kit was originally released back in 1963 before being tampered with by Revell in the early 1970's, not sure how Revell made such a mess of it, but it was built by a whole generation of budding modelers until we learnt just how very bad the kit was. Built as Out Of the Box as possible, see the Workbench link at the end.

North American P-51D-10-NA Mustang "Millie P" 44-14985/CY-G 1/72 scale Revell kit no.H-619 from 1963. Built from 25Nov2017 to 07Apr2019.

Needless to say I won't be doing one of these again . . . . . . . . . I hope as there is a H-47 kit in the stash I did not know I had till a few weeks ago :mental:

Just when we thought it was safe. It's back! The horror of it, albeit a nicely made horror show.

I built that kit probably back in the seventies. Even then I couldn't believe Revell had the cheek to call it a Mustang.

Terrific modeling skills! It's all already been said, but ...  wow.... that kit...

I did a "Starfix" Spitfire Mk. 22 a couple years ago, so I know what its like to have such a dreadful representation.

Great job, though!

A true trip down memory lane this post, I built the original version in the red (didn't know better) back in about "64 when it first came to Australia, but nowhere near as good a standard of painting as that, thought it was what today would be called cool with the sliding canopy, and the horse on the yellow rudder,

Think I was a bit devastated when I read a Review back in Flying Review International which had a 2 page modelling section back then by probably Bill Matthews who pointed out it was a total POS and the colour scheme was as well, an opinion not changed by anybody since, the new Revell management need to recycle the metal in that mould, to not inflict it on anybody ever again, and probably recall all the unbuilt ones out there and reuse the plastic.

I find it fascinating that you have built it to a very high standard more than once, there is probably a word for that type of modelling 🤔😲
