Mystery Science Theater was all right when I was on my own - but now I have a daughter who, at 12, has a good measure of heavily ironic/sarcastic Welsh wit and the cynicism of a 30 year old. Listening to her critiques is funnier. I'd love to get her to watch my classics list - she's seen Cyrano de Bergerac, Chinese Ghost Story - but I couldn't get her to watch Soylent Green... All she would say on that was a (slightly remodelled) quote from somewhere "Soylent Green? Mmm... My kind of people". Model Railway Journal did an article on a superb build of Birmingham New Street Signal Box, in which the author/builder almost apologises for choosing a piece of 1960s architecture. But, dear comrades - at least those of us who were alive then - do you not remember the design ethos of the period, from architecture to aviation, even kitchenware and clothing; film and music; yes, and books! -So much hope, looking forward to a better future... Then, I loved my ropey, hopey SF and functional structures. Sometimes it is good to revisit times of innocence. Richard Baker Posted November 28, 2017 Share Posted November 28, 2017 I really liked 'Moon Zero Two'- I have it on DVD in my collection. What I enjoy about it is that the film shows people living and working in space just like it is a normal job here on Earth. It is filmed through a sixties filter which adds some campy charm, but you could take the basic story and shift it to the wild west and almost have the same movie. My only wincing detraction is the hero show being such an obvious budget lift of the LEM with an added midsection. I wish they could have disguised it a bit more. I do love the Fargo Moon Buggies (a rental even), they remind me of the conjectural designs for our planned moon exploration illustrations. I tried to watch it - too many distractions. I must get it on DVD. BTW: any guesses on whose LEM kit the salvage shuttle is based? Think TCM were the last channel in the UK to have the broadcast rights to Moon Zero Two but it hasn't been on in quite a while. The original DVD release was a US region free disc backed with When Dinasours Ruled the Earth. Unfortunatley Warners unwittingly used the Continental cut of WDRtE that included some 'very interesting scenes' despite a G rating, which was withdrawn toute suite and never reissued. There was a limited edition region 2 DVD released with just Moon Zero Two on the disc. The print they used was superbly cleaned up widescreen version with bright vibrant colours. Both the above if one can find them attract significant premiums. They only version currently available at a decent price is the Italian version Luna Zero Due, the film was a huge hit in Italy. TheBaron Posted January 23, 2018 Share Posted January 23, 2018 I watched Moon Zero Two one rainy Sunday afternoon back in the 1970s as a child in Somerset, in awe of the sophisticated kitsch. Space 1999 used to be on of a Friday evening and an episode of UFO would occasionally appear at Saturday teatime. The future seemed secure and much of it promised to come in silver. Now in middle age I am folorn not to be wearing a suit with articulated elbows and no longer watch TV of any kind at all.
