... you air brush types do own brushes still, don't you? :wicked:

'course we do, how would we dust our models otherwise? :D:D

Sorry, couldn't resist it :D I actually use both airbrush and brushes :coolio:

Four pages in and I don't even have a seat. I'll prop up the bar as usual. :wicked: looking like you're going to enjoy this one Ced. Looking forward to see how those decals come out. Will anything print out that small on your printer? It seems awfully tiny. I concur with shrinking the .psd If the shape is a vector it will reduce more elegantly than a .jpg if it's not a vector your scuppered. Either way I'm sure it will end up looking wonderful.

Thanks chaps for your compassion. Very appreciated. She's on a good way and in good hands, but it was tight  that evening. Now she grumps on me and to other several things again, so everything is ok at the moment. And for all of you: If your mother (or any of your beloved)  draw back very unusual,  please watch for them,  because every second counts then!!!!!!! Cheers Benedikt

Sitting in my bay window overlooking the bay at St Ives (he he) in the sunshine I have difficulty persuading the tablet to download pictures, text and empty boxes is-us, so I don't see the images

(Things we suffer for full board huh?) 😱

I have found that MS Word handles reducing pictures and texts without excessive lossieness(?) So if you have problems with a print program to do it, try reductions in word too.

How's it looking chaps?

Me too

You guys.

A vector image is made from splines or lines in the program of choice. These can be scaled bigger or smaller without losing fidelity. A none vector image will blur when scaled as its raw data.

Great explanation, Johnny! Can we revert to speaking English, now?:lol:

Ok, I'll get my :coat::D

I've learnt something. I always wondered how some images seem to 'pixelate' (is that the right word?) when enlarged, while others don't. I think this is the answer. Cheers.

Yup that's the word. And no probs.

Well having finally gotten to see the images Ced I think that would print well enough if I tried it in M&S Word why not try it?

Not sure how it handled image files bit it wouldn't shock me if it used vectorig

How about now?

Ced,

Just a thought or two about troubleshooting these decals.

Isolate where the problem lies in your work pipeline - original sources or printer?

1. I'm not sure from whence you originally obtained those (bitmap?) graphics or the capabilities of your printer but if you were to print out a line of text (produced using fonts, not images) from MS word at the same size of the smaller graphics in the image above, if it gives to the same compromised quality then this would clearly indicate that your printer resolution is the issue - a trip to your nearest print bureau for a test output would obviate this.

2. If that is the case it's your printer, those two sans serif typefaces BTW look similar to Gill Sans and Helvetica \Arial families respectively, so shouldn't be hard to replicate such lettering and then ask the bureau to print the decal sheet for you.

3. Have you told the Boultbee crowd that you're building a replica? They may be prepared to let you have copies of any original SVG* files, which would let you use a free vector package like Inkscape to scale imagery and text to your needs for decalling.

*Scalable Vector Graphics. Unlike bitmaps, these are - as Johnny says above - a numerical description of shape so don't suffer from pixellation issues when enlarging/reducing i.e. are only compromised by the quality of the printer. Avoid .pdf as an output as it isn't a mastering format for professional print media. Pdfs compress embedded images and you're back to affecting image quality again unless you're clear about the difference between the likes .jpg and .lzw (lossy and lossless) algorithms, which it uses amongst others....

Apologies chaps for the absence of posts over the last couple of days but the builders have now gone (finally), I've had my induction training at Aerospace Bristol and we've been socialising... and there has been wine. We're off to see 'Murder on the Orient Express' tonight but then my week's clear until Telford travel on Friday so I should be able to get something done. Maybe.

Hi Benedikt - pleased to hear that your Mother's OK.

Thanks Roger - I thought the last print was OK but...

Giorgio you'll not tempt me away from 1/72 for a while! 'Upgrade to 1/32' indeed!

Thanks Rob - the pdf was better but see below. Do you have an email for Tim at Boultbee? If so could you PM me please? Thanks.

Thanks Adrian - sizing the transfers to the panels to avoid ridges is a good idea. Yes, I do have brushes!

Welcome Johnny and thanks for the tips. I admit I'd forgotten about vector graphics but it's coming back now... slowly!

Thanks Justin and John - ageing is my problem too!

Thanks Pete - what's the vector Victor? :D

Thanks Bill and Stuart :) Word is not one of my favourite programs on the Mac but I have similar things to try.

Thanks Tony - good plan and thanks for detailing it. While I'm 'away' I'll leave you with this and, hopefully tomorrow, sort out another run through the process...

The images were taken on my iPhone so the resolution of the images should be fine (4032 × 3024)

My printer is a Dell C2660dn colour laser so, if I ask it to, it should be capable of high resolution printing.

The problem has been importing the images to GIMP and using a 72dpi resolution - I am an idiot.

The final step was to use LibreOffice Draw and I think this is capable of vector image processing, again if I tell it to.

I'll have another play, make sure I'm using SVG packages and avoid jpg and other compression formats.

Thanks Johnny :)

Not much progress today as I've been ferrying Mrs B around. I've blobbed some paint on the internals but that's it.

I also need to save some smarty points for the weekend so tomorrow I may be doing chores.

What chores? Pint of bitter please.

Boom boom tish :coat:

Hi Dennis - glad you enjoyed the clip :)

Pathetic progress here. The figures arrived and they're masked:

Rats. i could try to chip off the masks I suppose but I think I'll have a look around at Telford and see what's about.

I have done some bits on the internals:

Happy enough if a bit rough. The IPs had blobs of white put in the dials, the whole lot was painted Flat Black and then I scratched some off with a #10a - effective enough but don't look too closely.

Off to Telford tomorrow and hoping to see you there :)
