Marlin
Hi. It's time for a new build. As I've stated before I really like Eduards MiG-21's. So much that I'm starting another. This time it'll be a MiG-21bis from Ilmavoimat, The Finnish Airforce. This is what I've got to work with. A MiG-21bis overtree box. url=https://flic.kr/p/ZUmgid]F001 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And some extra details.F002 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Cold War Studios resin nose.F003 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF004 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF005 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr A pitot from Master, a must have. I glued the ejectionsseat and a droptank together yesterday when I was waiting for some paint to dry. F006 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The decals are leftovers from my first MiG-21bis. I did that in a Syrian livery.F007 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Some canopy seal decals from Furball design.F008 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'll arm this MiG with 4 R60's infrared missiles and 2 R3R radar missiles, and a 490 liter droptank on the belly.013 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I plan to do a speedbuild with this MiG. The plan is to have it done on Finland’s Centenary on December 6th. To be continued..... /Bosse

Uncle Uncool
Bosse, my mate! How's it going, luv? That set by CWS is just an awesome addition to your kit! (if only someone would switch to airbrushing... Oh, but beggars can't be choosers). How's the clan? And what's with the Eduard overtrees? Is it a complete kit? Okay, will wait 'til Monday to see your progress. Oh, no! It's my post #666! Horns are coming off the sides of my forehead! Change shift, I'm turning demonic red... (oh, those eyes!). Marlin
Hi. I couldn't wait until the weekend to do the surgery. And I suspects that I'll have to do some alterations to the cockpit and nosegear well to fit the resin nose. So out with some tape and saw.F009 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF010 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Before I made the cut I thought that I'd strenghen my nerves with the seasons first Christmas Lager. F011 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr No problem getting the nose section off. url=https://flic.kr/p/214no8K]F012 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And the resin nose fits. Although I did mangage to get a small gap. Nothing serious that can't be puttied over.F013 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF014 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF015 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr So now it's done. I also did most of the sub assemblies yesterday, and the plan for tonight is to get them painted. @Unc - Everythings fine with the clan. Eduards overtrees are just the plastickit, no instructions, decals, PE or resin. It's a great way to stock up on multiples, as I've done with the MiG-21 series. To be continued..... /Bosse

That ought to have been your Lager sip; y'see, hooch & resin don't ever mix. (Then again, that 50% alcohol brew is making me drool all over). Or have you forgotten back in 2011 when you were building the Tarmil, Tsniut & Tashbetz-nosed Mirage family, while drinking in the den, you almost burnt yer fingers down? The time to go to the cottage is getting near, so don't forget to dust my doghouse up there. Clever thing about those overtrees; didn't know what they were. Wish more manufacturers would wise up about this. Cheers, Bosse! Unc2
Marlin
Thanks Unc. I blame the plastic calipers, and not the lager for the gap. /Bosse
Antti_K
Hej Bosse! This is a very interesting project. I served the Finnish Air Force during the "MiG Era" and they were impressing beasts. We had six of them in the squadron. I made colour comparisons last summer using the Swedish NCS colour system (I noted you live in Upplands Väsby so I quess you are familiar with NCS). We had a former Reconnaissance Squadron aircraft (MG-114) here at Björneborg. Some colour info for you: Cockpit blue-green S3060-B70G, S2555-B80G and S4050-B70G the last one was observed behind the seat head rest and was the most faded example. Nose cone: S5040-G30Y Inside air intake: burned metal Green antenna fairings on tail and on wings: S5040-G20Y Landing gear bays: S3502-B Green wheel hubs: S4550-G20Y Russian light gray undersides and inside landing gear bay doors: S2005-B50G Russian light green (uppersides): S5040-G60Y (add some white) Russian dark brown (uppersides): S8505-Y80R (slightly too reddish but the brown had several variations between nearly black and a reddish brown) Here you can find some detail shots of the real thing: http://www.pienoismallit.net/galleria/referenssi_13421/ I have many more photos and the original aircrew manuals so if you need further information, just ask. Kind Regards, Antti
Marlin
Thanks alot for the information Antti. I've bought the finnish air force colours from AKAN. I hope that they are correct. /Bosse Edited November 5, 2017 by Marlin
whiskey
No joke, it’s because the Finnish MiG-21’s that I actually bought my first Fishbed kit. I really enjoy looking at them. Great info for my future build.

Marlin
Hi. Almost all sub assemblies are done, and it's time to glue an aircraft together. F016 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi, My Finnish MiG is starting to grow. As I suspected you have to adjust the nosegear well a bit. Plastic part C40 is replaced by a smaller resin one.F017 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Then I dryfitted the aft conering so it fits up against the nosegear well. When it was in the right position I drenced it with CA glue.F018 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr After that I glued in the cockpit/nosegear section.F019 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The part fits reasonably well.F020 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Less so on this side.F021 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr But nothing that can't be fixed with some small plasticard strips.F022 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr So out with the strips and the glue.F023 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr To be continued..... /Bosse
Marlin
Hi. It's time to glue the fuselage together. When gluing the fin to the fuselage, use every clamp you can find to get a good seam.F024 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The same goes when fitting the wing section to the fuselage, it's unfortunately very easy to get a step between the wing and fuselage.F025 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr When the wingsection had dried I just continued to mount all the small bits.F026 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF027 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF028 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Nearly all bits are done. The traces after my nose surgery have been taken care of and are now gone. F029 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF030 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And with that my plan for the evening is to glue the last parts around the cockpit in place, and then primer. If I'm to have this done by december 6th it's high time go start painting now.F031 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr One layer of steelgray (AKAN 73023) I'll be continuing painting this during the week. Marlin
Hi. My finnish MiG has got some colour. F032 by Bosse Persson, on FlickrF033 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've used AKAN's AN11 and AN44. And now I've seen one of the advantages of acrylics. I did two coats of each colour last night, and with my normal Humbrol it would have taken at least four evenings. And with Xtracolor or WEM/Sovreign it would have taken even longer. So I guess I'll convert to acrylics, and I really like AKAN's colours. I'll done some more painting tonight, and then some clear coat. And perhaps that means that I'll start with the decals this weekend. To be continued..... /Bosse
