Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito FB Mk.VI. Finished!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Its been a while - I haven’t had any luck with a spare canopy for my Temest so that’s on hold for now so onto my Tamiya Mosquito Mk  IVB.

As is customary I’ve started with the cockpit the only additions are Airscale instruments and some yellow disks that I cut out from a spare decal that I had. Its recieved a gloss cote and later on today I’ll start a little weathering using oils.

I’m going to add some home made seat belts to finish it off.

Well thats all I have for now.

Cheers all.

Now I know why I normally buy after market seat belts - that was emotional!

They don’t look too bad, well not under the canopy anyway!

Anyway hope you all had a great weekend. Until next time.

Morning Ian

Thanks mate. I haven't had much time so far this week but I hope to get it buttoned up and structurally complete for the weekend so I can start painting her.

Morning all

A little progress on my mosquito. I’ve managed to get the majority of the paint work on, sprayed the codes and the invasion stripes. The only real problem that I encountered was getting a satisfactory demarcation line between the green and grey as seen in reference photo’s this did take me several attempts.

The wings, nosecone and gun pack under the fuselage arn’t glued on at the moment they are just loosley fitted to aid in the painting process and in the case of the nosecone and gun pack I need to add the guns at some stage.

One thing I did encounter which was a little annoying was two cracks appeared where the front cockpit section attaches to the main fuselage (both sides) I’ve filled them with home made filler and I’ll let it dry for a couple of days before sanding back, its no biggy as I have some touch ups to carry.

Oh and I found the cockpit door it was on my desk all the time, I did order a resin replacement part so I’ll use that in its place anyway.

Anyway some pictures....

Evening all

Just a small update - I have some decals on (not many to be fair) and I’ve made a start on the under carriage. I’ve chosen to remove the  wheel axel in order to make painting the assembly easier, I’ll just replace it with plastic rod when I’m done...

So there you go, not alot but its something.

Cheers

Hello again

A little more progress to report. Today I’ve put the props together, painted the undercarriage, the undercarriage doors, entry door and I’ve done a little more decalling...

And I’ve decided on my next build the FLY 1/32 Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb..

It shouldn’t take too long to build as there isn’t much to it!

Cheers all

Hello again

I’ve managed a little more to my Mosquito, its getting there but I do still have a way to go.

It finally has an identity, NT198 a machine that flew with 305 Sqn RAF. I’ve used Air Master barrels to enhance the look of the old girl and they are exquisit...

The axels hanging out of each wheel are only temporary, I just wanted to see what it looked like on its feet and tbh I’m pleasently suprised at what a good looking plane the Mosquito actually is and Tamiya have done a fine job in reproducing her..

And finally one last picture of her on my work bench..

Well thats that for now, I still have the decalling to wrap up, odd and sods to attach and the weathering to do. I’m looking forward to starting my Hurricane, I’ve been working from home today and I’ve found several video builds on line and although it looks a challenge it looks to build into a fine looking model of a Hurricane - can’t wait!!

Cheers all

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone

I’ve started to weather my Mosquito and I’m happy with how phase 1 has gone.

As most of you do nowadays I used a Flory models dark, dirt wash over a semi Matt finish, left it to dry for a day then using water moistened kitchen towels and cotton buds wiped it off. Because the finish on the model is semi Matt it stuck to certain places quite nicely, giving the impression of a well used machine. I still need to take a little more off especially around the nose and cockpit area but once I’m happy I’ll start with the oils.

Hi everyone

another small update. I think I’ve gone as far as I want to go with the weathering. For some reason I couldn’t get the effect I was looking for with oils so I resorted to pastels and I think it looks ok, it certainly looks like some of the very dirty planes that I’ve seen in photos...

since the photos were taken I’ve shortened the axels on the wheels, attached the gear doors and the bombs.

hopefully I’ll get it finished tomorrow.

cheers
