I found this photo just now. Very interesting C-123! I'm guessing the wingtip pods are auxiliary jet engines, possibly because it is ski-equipped and needed the extra power to unstick from  ice or snow when fully loaded? It was evidently used by the AK ANG, and I found photos of it preserved outdoors at an Alaskan AB which closed and the aircraft was moved elsewhere. Just curious- does anybody know more about this Provider? (Photo via mediadefense.org)

Joe Baugher has this:

". . .  converted to C-123J. To US Department of the Interior as N4393E in 1976. Preserved at Kulis ANGB, AK. By 2011, moved to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, 176th Wing, Alaska ANG."

Wikipedia says the C-123J was a "C-123B with two wing tip mounted Fairchild J44-R-3 booster engines, 10 converted." Joe Baugher says of 56-4395: "To US Department of the Interior as N4393E in 1976. Preserved at Kulis ANGB, AK. By 2011, moved to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, 176th Wing, Alaska ANG."

Total ten C-123Bs were converted to the C-123H (54-647 and 56-4388-56-4396), but only three (56-4391, 56-4394 and 56-4395) out of ten were equipped with retractable skis.

There are six photos of the C-123J in Squadron No. 124, C-123 Provider in action.
