Flanker File 1/72 SU-27 SU-33

Recommended Posts

Being a fairly new modeller I do tend to panic when it comes to building a new release kit or one I have spent more than a tenner on, hence little progress on my Trumpeter 1/72 SU-33. To push me on I have decided to reduce the Flanker build up in the stash and do a double build with older bargain kits. The SU-27 will hopefully be a current Kaliningrad Flanker while I am not sure if I should use up my Begemot decal set and do a modern SU-33 or make the old school Soviet navy one...

SU-33 Cockpit has absolutely no detail so while I consider what to do with that I have pressed on with SU-27, which is just as old with raised panel lines but cockpit did have a bit of detail.

Not sure how to tackle raised panel lines to highlight them, bit of black on the top free hand, not sure itl work. This is going to be a dirty oily Kaliningrad flanker so maybe a wash might help the lines after painting.

Quite a bit done today, bit of a colour issue, like the pale blue and grey camo. Not too fussed on this being perfect as my main build is the Trumpeter SU-33 but I’d still like it to be displayable....thanks for looking, any advice welcome

First coat for the camouflage, rushed this a bit but I want to get to practising my finishing techniques. Think these may be too pale, could hardly see these when painting.

Finally some bench time as the deadline looms. The Trumpeter SU-33 I think will now go into the Carriers Ahoy build and I am struggling with the antique Zvezda SU-33 as the detail is so poor. So big effort on this Kaliningrad Russian navy SU-27 and see how we go from there. Getting married 2 weeks today so two count downs on.

Metal on the large exhausts is on top side and underneath, thick shading lines hidden and will hopefully get a good run in the holidays with little jobs here and there.

My first go at detailing the cans with hot metal blue and burnt iron and bronze. Think it looks Ok for a first effort. Weathering and decals half done, hopefully get this finished by Saturday
