Tamiya´s Skyraider to Korean War variant?

Hi,

I made a quick search but am still not confident enough on what i found. I love the Skyraider but know very little about it really.

But, what do i need to modify on a Tamiya 1/48 A-1H to make it into a Korean War era bird? Just love the dark blue scheme..

Can I use any of the ordnance?

I guess I might need to buy that SAM Publications book on it? :)

Depending on which version of the Skyraider (AD-1/2/3/4) you're making you'll have to remove the additional side armour panels as well the belly panel.  IIRC the Skyraider started  with one gun in each wing and changed to two with the AD-4 . The wing drop tank pylons need to be modified but MDC do a set which takes care of that.

Euro decals have two sheets one for USN one for USMC

Thanks Stephen!

Yeah I only knew that the AD-2 had one gun in each wing and not when they changed so thanks!

Not seen those tanks so that is very helpful!

It is not really important which model as long as I can paint it in that wonderful blue colour. ;) I do not have any decals yet but was looking at those you posted already and kinda fell for USN one with a green fin tip..

Ah ok! Cool. Well, as long as I can hang on some DTs and bombs I am kinda fine.

Thanks for that info, I´ll try to have a look.

I see I might need a second kit, did not know that brengun had made this as AM.. ;)

This explains the armor plating:

as noted in the article the way you can tell is if the step is has a ledge and the one here has it:

here is a Marine Skyraider in Korea and you can see the armor plate:

The Modeler's Guide to the Skyraider by Jay Sherlock would be an excellent reference to see detailed differences between all of the versions, if you can find one. Tailspin Turtle has several articles on his  Tailhook Topics site that will be helpful, as well as the Ginter book on the Skyraider. I'm not familiar with the Tamiya kit, as it's not my scale, but you might check on whether or not the kit has the long or short front landing gear fairing doors, as IIRC, the AD-4's were fitted with the "short" doors. The other comments regarding 20mm cannon fit and armor plate, as well as the type/shape of the wing stores pylons, seat type, and antenna fit are worth noting. If you will hurry up and do the conversion, the sooner we will see a new-tool release! IIRC, there was also a change in the windscreen somewhere along the line, but I don't recall the version this was done- Tommy will know, I'm sure.

  • 2 years later...

I know that this is an old thread but I needed to know about the armor plate on the aircraft. I want to do some Marine aircraft and those were all early airframes. The last ones were the orange and white Quantico birds. I like the Monogram kits better than the Tamiya kits and have about six in my stash. I am still waiting for Obscureco to release the corrected cowling which I sent him the master for a few years ago. Sent him a few emails lately but still no response.

Looking at the picture in post #6, you have an early AD with the armor. I do however wish to do one of the Quantico birds and I am quite sure that there is no armor on that.
