Построен в бомбардировщике, ракете, разведке и помехе. Предназначен для замены флота Ту-16. В дальнейших удачных вариантах Ту-22 были заменены различными сериями Ту-22М, Ту-22 в вариантах разведчиков, а глушители действовали до начала последнего десятилетия двадцатого века.
