Mancunian airman
Just curious to know if the RAF had there own Bomb Disposal Squad (unit) ? I appreciate that there were armourers on the RAF station so perhaps didnt need vehicles marked up with red fenders etc I suspect not but, I want to make use of the Austin 'Tilly' diecast vehicle I have . . . . Andrew Jones
Try googling 5131 [BD] Squadron RAF , The RAF's only dedicated Bomb disposal unit formed in July 1939. PS. the RAF didn't use the Austin "tilly" , you would need a Hillman or Standard. Edited October 1, 2017 by Andrew Jones
Ivor Ramsden
The Royal Air Force had several Bomb Disposal Flights but I think these were formed around the mid-war period. Andrew is correct is saying that the RAF didn't use Austin Tillies. Thread here:
Mike Starmer
The RAF dealt with all UXBs on Air Ministry properties and airfields plus those allied weapons jettisoned or otherwise released over the UK. Enemy weapons elsewhere were dealt with by RE BD squads or RN mine disposal units as appropriate.
