Airfix 1/48th Walrus

Recommended Posts

Hello gentlemen,

The Airfix Walrus was what I intended to build for this group build. But as it looked a long way off I decided to build a Aichi Seiran instead.

With the Walrus now available, I had a chat with Jaime and decided to put the Seiran on hold and start the Walrus now.

I'll take a few photos of the kit sprues and post them tomorrow.

Thank you, Joe.

Cool! Airfix timed the release quite well. Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

Thank you Paul.

I'm going to use one of the colour schemes from the decal sheet below.

I think I will go for the Australian yellow Walrus. I'm slow builder, so want to keep it simple.

But, the Argentinian one looks tempting.

Hi Joe,

Welcome again to the GB :) Great choice going for the Airfix Walrus first! As I said elsewhere, the GB dates where delayed as much as possible in order to cope with Airfix's release date for this kit, so we'll all be interested in following your build.

I think any of the two schemes you mentioned (Australian or Argentinian) will look great.

Cheers

Jaime

Hi Joe - I probably won’t make Bovington this time. Two hour drive for me :(

Some great detail on the kit eh? Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks for all these pictures. It looks even better than what I hoped.

May it cross the Channel soonest! :waiting:

Got the 1/48 P-40 almost finished, a joy to build. These new Airfix kits are just great. With the P-51, Fury and Stuka on approach i'll get broke before the end of the year.

Thanks again.

Your welcome Jaime, sorry they are not up to much. The more I look at this kit, the more I like it.

Ooh goody. Another Walrus!

Glad you like them Bigdave.

I intend to just do a dry run with the first assembly phase tomorrow. Hopefully if I get it done, I'll post a photo.

Thanks again gentlemen, regards Joe .

Some Eduard sets below if you wish to see them.

Excellent! I saw this in the LMS on Friday. I didn't dare make the stash any bigger, maybe Christmas. :santa: The yellow scheme looks wonderful. I'll tag along if you don't mind.

Johnny.:giles:

Hello Johnny, thank you. Your more than welcome. It's a lovely model, I just need to get my finger out and finish it.

That's why I'll probably go for the yellow scheme.

I'm thinking about painting the fuselage in four sections, then glue it together. :hmmm:It will depend on the fit, but that way, I can put the transparencies in after painting. Also, a lot less masking when it comes to the cockpit. It's just a thought while sitting here looking at the instructions. But with no centre line seam to clean up, I think it can be done. The wings will be painted with the decals on for sure before they go on the fuselage/ hull.

I normally build my models in sub assemblies, then stick them together. It's a lazy way of doing it  :sleep_1:,but it works for me.

I'm off now to give your Catalina a coat of looking at.

Joe.

Following the precedent that was set on Spadget's Black Cat thread which linked the subject matter to songs, I couldn't resist adding this:

What a great track. Released 50 years ago!

I've glued some parts together, and just held other parts with tape.

I intend to glue a few more parts together before I start painting the interior as I'm waiting for some harnesses from Eduard.

Thanks for looking, Joe.

Good start, Joe! The interior looks beautiful with all that detail.

So, you're set on the Australian yellow scheme?

Cheers

Thank you Jaime. I think so, but I'll keep the Argentinian scheme in mind as I do like it.

Fantastic photos, Zeb, on the yellow one I love the fact that you can see the structure in the wing!

Great to see this is out, it's a great looking kit, and I'll follow your build with interest.

Thank you Robert.

I don't have time for painting at the moment, but do have time for some gluing some more parts together.

Building out of sequence, I'm going to assemble the top wing next.

O5yuQp1.jpg

I'm going to build my Walrus with the wings extended. The plans above show which parts have to be trimmed to accommodate

the main spar.

I intend to assemble the above parts tomorrow (Tuesday), and clean up the seams the next day all being well.

Thanks for looking, Joe.

Very nice Joe, lovely details for you to apply your skills to!

(Just caught up after the man cave reorg - still plenty of 'you know what' here, thanks!)
