Must admit I was suprised since the Crusier of the same is still knocking about.

I hope the next two wont be so predictable so unimaginative....but if we dont the welsh will get upset followed by the daily mail readers.

How about òh Swansea and umm.....Salisbury

How about HMS Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? That should keep them happy!

HMS Shetland : Paternal Grangfathedr'sbirth place

HMS Hull : Mother's birthplace

HMS Sunderland : Father's birthplace

HMS Kingston : their son's birthplace

That's it, settled then.

Next hull could be called HMS Hull, well it is the City of Culture....

Ouch Dave you just beat me to it.

That really settles it then.

Its towns then. How staggeringly unoriginal.

It called tradition - just about the only thing the Royal Navy has left.

If left to the public to decide ship names we would end up with HMS Kardashian, HMS Strictly or HMS Boaty McBoatFace.

Somebody mentioned Warspite. Interested to find where things come from. here is what I found.

Laurie

The origins of the name are unclear, although it is probably from the Elizabethan spelling of the word 'spite' -- i.e. 'spight' --

in part embodying contempt for the Navy's enemies, but which was also the common name for the green woodpecker,

suggesting the 'Warspight' would poke holes in enemy ships' (wooden) hulls

No HMS Boaty McBoatface then? I’ll settle for Liverpool as a suitable alternative.

On a serious note, does this smack of seniority like in recycling squadron numbers, so all the ‘famous’ ones get kept in circulation?

I must admit those responsible for the naming of the A class submarines deserve a pat on the back: some splendid names in there even if they'll mean nothing to Joe and Jill Public: Anson, Audacious, Agamemnon and, if rumour is to be believed, Ajax.

Pity, seeing Ajax, that they missed out Achilles ?

Not like the splendidly martial Admiralty-selected HMS Morris Dance

That is excellent.

HMS Fandango. I would love that cap tally.

Brilliant.

( inadvertent use of HMS Brilliant and Excellent)

I have utmost respect for anyone who served on convoys. However it could have been worse:

Flower Class

Thankful for small mercies.
