Hannes
Hello space freaks ! I want to show you a rare model. It was made in GDR in the 60´s and 70´s for celebrating the socialist friendship between East Germany and the USSR. It´s the first man in space , Yuri Gagarin and his spaceship Vostok 1 . Enjoy !
Corsairfoxfouruncle
Very nice 👍 ... interesting to learn they had modelling behind the Iron curtain.
Hannes
I found this kit on a flea-market . It was a relative easy build but most of the plastic parts were twisted that´s why I needed a lot of filler for correcting this communist kit . Eric Mc
I built that kit back in the 1980s. It is actually fairly accurate and builds up into an impressive model - as you can see. It was not that hard to get hold of. I think the more recent release by Revell was based on the VEB moulds (I may be wrong). I have an unbuilt one in the stash which I will do at some time - hopefully not too far in the future.
Fatboydim
Very nice. It was not until I looked at the box art on the side, that I remembered Yuri Gagarin landed by parachute, and not in the Vostok spacecraft.
Eric Mc
Something the Soviets were not keen to admit for many years . The official story was that all of the Vostok cosmonauts DID eject before landing EXCEPT for Gagarin. They didn't want to admit that he had ejected just like the others because they did not want the FAI withdrawing all the speed and altitude records they were claiming. The FAI rules stipulated that a pilot had to land in his aircraft/spacecraft for a record to be valid. Bailing out before landing would negate any record claims.
The Tomohawk Kid
The VEB kit is a copy of the Revell kit, the original styrene in these VEB kits was extremely hard and on a occasions brittle. Therefore well done for conquering that aspect of the kit. There was also a 1/30 Soyuz that came from a Russian manufacturer called Ogenek - it is a really nice kit indeed and if memory serves when originally imported was a tenner. I can't recall the last time I saw one( that said I have not looked) but I imagine will be significantly more now. Thomo.
