"The Flying Pig" Short Sunderland MK 1 1/72 Italeri.

Recommended Posts

Progressing well, Simon. Filling seams and gaps is always boring but a necessary task. All effort put in this phase of the build pays off later with an excellent finish.

Cheers

Nice work so far. I think you are enjoying it. Interesting discussion on names and nicknames. A quote in a book isn't necessarily gospel but it's a darn good piece of evidence compared to "I think it was ......."

I have seen several builds of these at model shows and, though nicely built, to my eye they looked toy like.

Those awful panel lines can be fixed........... but whether you like them or don't like them is a personal thing.

Hi folks, I am back again.

Yeah, nearly 6 weeks away from her I finally got there.

Not a lot done but nearly ready for priming.

Air scoops were polished off a bit and now a wait priming.

AS 10

Next thing was the wing lights.

I had given them a coat of filler before I had the op, so it was time to clean up the mess around these.

Also cut out and masked the light covers.

WL 10

A bit more work needed there but should not hold up the rest of the build.

I hope to give a progress report later in the week.

All comments welcome.

Hi folks, thanks for the kind messages.

A bit more done early this evening.

Those wing light covers, well progress there.

With a bit of filing/carving I got the in board one to fit reasonably well.

WL 11

And the other side.

WL 12

Still a little proud, but a little more sanding /carving got the job done.

Both now have a snug fit, I also number them just in case.

Wl 13

Now for a cuppa and a smoke then maybe a little bit more?

All comments welcome.

Thanks again for the good messages, yes I am back again.

It feels good, after sitting there looking across the room at it.

Although during that time it gave me chance to think on the up coming problems.

Anyhow back to the build, and wing tip lights.

Marked and drilled the holes for said lights.

Wl 14

Those now need priming next.

The inboard Port engine exhaust was the next problem I came across.

This fits into the wing at the leading edge, with a separate outlet fixed to the top of the nacelle.

They give you this as the exhaust.

EX 1

To fit into this hole that you have to make.

EX 2

It`s as ugly as sin so I think I will have to redo this part another way.

I will probably plug the hole with some sprue/runner plus filler then re drill a pilot hole and remake the exhaust pipe.

While handling the wing the aileron came off.

Wing tip off 1

The moulded pin had broke, not surprising as it is very tiny.

So will glue it it in place before I prime the whole wing late.

Oh the joys of this hobby.

An up date maybe tomorrow.

Well a day later than I thought but an update.

Leaving the wing problem alone for now and concentrating  on getting the fuselage bits ready for priming/ painting.

These are the tools of choice.

Masking tools of choice.

And here are the bits to be masked !!!!

Bits to be masked

Started with the front turret, front first.

F Turret 1

Then back.

F Turret 2

The 2 port holes will be done with masking fluid, easier.

Started the rear turret before back spasm kicked in, so left it for now and wait until comfortable again.

All comments welcome.

Well folks, sorry for the delay but a lack of mojo and life have kept me away from the bench, until this afternoon.

On with the show, masking canopies everybody's bain.

Masking 1

And this bit, though only the front panel on the bomb aimer`s window, (it will be closed on the build).

Masking 2

Not as  good as other people can do but I am stilling learning.

I did think about getting some P.C.M`s for it but I had already started .

I think for future builds with extensive glazing I will bite the bullet and buy a set.

Still have the port holes exteriors to do but will use a masking fluid for them.

Must be time for some priming soon, so until then.

All comments welcome.

Good to have you back, Simon! I understand you well, as life and lack of motivation frequently join forces against my modelling duties.

Good job on masking the transparent parts, especially because it was hand made.

Cheers

Well folks, priming time.

After sorting out the spray booth with a new filter, I attacked the priming stage.

P a P 1

A couple of engines, showing that I used Alcad 2 Black Primer/Micro filler.

The other pics don`t show it well.

P a P 2

And the main canopy also got a shot of primer too

Well the inside of the cockpit area is black so why not .

P a P 3

There is more stuff primed but I am not going to bore anyone with that lot.

Still got the rest of the other sides of things to prime, probably  tomorrow.

Until then.

All comments welcome.

Simon.

P.S. Memo to ones self, switch the the spray booth on next time, I wondered why the room smelled.
