Hi All,

I really fancy doing a U.S. Pacific theatre fighter or fighter-bomber. 1/48 or bigger. 1/32 would be best.

can anyone please recommend a nice kit, based on the following criteria:

Priority 1: Price

Priority 2: Quality of parts fitment

Priority 3: Detail of the kit

Just off the top of my head and you didnt specify either US Navy, USMC, or USAAF ? Most of the following especially eduard weekend kits are very high quality just don't come with all the bells and whistles and After market extras. And are reasonably priced. The Hasegawas and Tamiyas can be more expensive but look around.

1. F4u corsair from Tamiya in 1/48th 1/32nd. This can be done in both USN & USMC.

2.  P-40-USAAF Hasegawa in both scales.

3. P-38-USAAF hasegawa, 1/48 and possibly in 1/32.

4. P-39-USAAF Special hobby, and Kitty hawk in 1/32 Hasegawa, eduard and revellogram in 1/48.

5. P-47D or N-USAAF Hasegawa, in 1/32 & 1/48, Tamiya in 1/48 and Revellogram for the D & N in 1/48.

6. P-51D late war mostly for escort but some were prepped for fighter bomber use. Tamiya and Dragon in 1/32. Tamiya, Hasegawa, in 1/48th.

7. F6f Hellcat- USN & USMC in 1/32 is hasegawa. Maybe Zoukei-Mura might have one but they can get pricey. But in 1/48 hasegawa and eduard or top of the list.

Hope this gives you a starting point. Some of these are out of production. Most can be found on a certain auction site or at swap meets and even on some dusty shelves at retailers if you have a keen eye. And you can always try the wanted section here at BM, once you have 100 posts.

Hi Mike,

Accurate Minatures/Italeri 1/48 Avenger or Revell re-issue of the Pro-Modeller 1/48 Helldiver both reasonable prices, detailed and great fit.

Best of luck with whatever you choose

A good price and a great build was the Academy 1/72 Corsair. Everything was good except the decals, but that's all Academy kits. To fix them either use Mircro film or buy aftermarket decals.

Another good one is the Airfix Wildcat and Martlet. They're around  9 pounds (12 bucks for me) and it's quite a fun and easy build.

If you're in 1/48 the Tamiya Corsair is a good build. If you can afford it I would recommend an Eduard weekend edition Hellcat in either 1/48 or 1/72 if you want to start something more advanced.
