Consolidated PB2B-2 Catalina, QANTAS

Recommended Posts

OK, so I was not happy with the way the pax windows were going (wasted a lot of time trying to fill them!) so I cut them out again

The mess that was the acetate backing

So I filled the openings with CD case clear plastic. I had to rub the first down, some polishing required to get it to an acceptable clear

Another fitted (can you see it?)

And finally, another test fit on the (now painted) base

I have been getting some paint on.

Since the decal sheet was missing one of the red cheat lines (must talk to Pete at Hawkeye about that) I decided to mask and paint the red lines on the fuselage and tail. After a day it is still tacky, I used a Humbro; enamel and with the temp reaching 40 degrees here yesterday I had expected it would have dried by now. Looks like I will have to strip and reapply tonight.

Hi Ray

Humbrol enamels don't seem to take to the heat well Seems the base evaporates leaving a tacky pigment I  does settle down eventually. I have had some take up to 48 Hrs to cure properly. Try a low speed fan . Seems to help

Martin,

I ended up overcoating with a Tamiya red, did not like it so I sanded back the red back and have reprimed the white. Masking again tonight and will just go with the Tamiya red.

Been a bit preoccupied lately with making updates so finally here is one.

I was not happy with the way the clear inserts settled so I pulled off the masking and puttied and sanded them.

Remasked and they looked a lot better

Attempt 2 at masking and spraying the cheat line in progress

Also masked and sprayed the float 'wells'

Might run a wash in there to dirty it up a bit.

The hull also got a spray, last one I hope

I used Tamiya chrome silver which I will dirty up with some dry brushing I think

Everything masked for the hull spray

and the masking is off

Some touchups to do followed by the decals

Finally, I could not resist a test fit of the major assemblies, still have the install the wing supports when the wings go on

That’s looking every inch like a tall tail QF Cat running its throaty engines at Sydney’s Rose Bay.

I’m very impressed by the model and base and you’ve done a grand job in completing that conversion to the base kit. Love it..

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks guys, I am very happy with the recovery of the paintwork. Now the decals are on I am on the home run. After the last shots, I added the landing light clear parts to the leading edge of the wing and started painting the wing support struts.

The final thing to do is to paint the props, still trying to figure out the best way to give an 'authentic' prop spin look.

Dermot (@Dermo245), the Orion is one of those 'bitsa' projects, doing some when I can. It will be an Argentine P-3B when the paint goes on. Pity I couldn't put floats on it and run a build thread here :D
