Supermarine S.6B

Eastern Express 1/72

 

For the 1931 Schneider Trophy competition the British, somewhat controversially, raced with no opposition to win and permanently retain the Schneider Trophy.
The winning Schneider flight was piloted by Flt. Lt. John N. Boothman in aircraft serial number S1595 at a speed of 340.08 mph (547.19 km/h), flying seven perfect laps of the triangular course over the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and the British mainland. On the same day, another S.6B (S1596) flown by Flt Lt George Staniforth set a new Absolute World Speed Record of 379.05 mph and on 29th September this was increased this figure to 407.5 mph (S1595).

Done!  This was fun little kit and really had no issues that could be surmounted with some careful sanding, a little putty and some imagination.  The DH 60G, Amphibious sport plane...One could imagine Agatha Christie being flown about the Lake District, perhaps, or some idle playboy skimming into a loch for a weekend of salmon fishing in a clear stream...

 

The two little touches of the trolly and the mooring line I think are the best bits.  Decals were smooth and easy, the painting was easy.  Not much that I had to fix, really.  This kit fits in the palm of my hand.  So small...Happy to have built it and very happy have been included in the GB.  Thank you all!  Honestly, I am waiting to see the Caudron G4...

My latest completion is Airfix's 1/72 Ju52-3M.

As I said in the WiP thread here, this is the 2011 release (new decals) of the 1964 tooling.

I'm quite a fan of old Airfix. I guess this is a bit of nostalgia, like 'the railways' and old cars. Good memories, not necessarily good quality. The moulds are obviously showing their age but, with a bit of TLC, they 'brush up' well.

 

OOB with Vallejo Model Air over Stynylrez white primer (to save masking the tail band). Filmoplast tape for the canopy frame. W&N matt varnish.

Just make sure you put the 'no step', transfers on the end of the flaps. Just saying.

Matchbox's Dornier Do18.

An enjoyable build, no major fit issues just a smooth build that has kept me happy since the start. It's been finished as a nod towards pre plastic models. Details have been smoothed out and the whole model simplified. Panel lines are done in pencil for instance. I'm happy with the result.

 

There has been  lots of faffing about, trying to decide how to show the finished plane. In the end I couldn't make up my mind, so I'm posting pictures of each different scenario. The plane is central to each picture, but has a different look in each case, especially the B+W one. I'm a bit odd in that the model is only part of my modelling. I like the setting up of pictures, different display options and so on. To a certain extent, the picture is the finished model.

 

The B+W picture has had a bit of Photoshop inflicted on it, added grain and contrast and a bit of tidying up of the background. it's also had the colour removed, obviously!  The other shots have been cropped and in some cases the colours balanced as I don't have my photo tent and lighting to hand at the moment. All the shots were taken with an overhead lightbulb and a desk lamp shone from the side.  Some have camera flash used, some not. The model itself has had no photoshopping, it's as built, warts and all. The foreground and background have had a bit of colour balancing to remove shadows and creases from the different  backdrop materials I used.

My latest completion for this GB is another 'vintage Airfix'. I said above that I was quite a fan of old Airfix kits. I think that has worn off been changed by this one.

According to Scalemates.com this is the 2010 issue (new decals) of the 1959 tooling. That's old and it shows.

Scratch 1/72 FBA H flying boat

 

Built in several versions that flew throughout most of the war. The H was the most prolific and served predominately with the French and Italian Naval Aviation. The build represents an aircraft based at Dunkirk, circa 1916-17. Build thread :

I finally managed to finish in due time !!

All this has started as a joke... Here's my Ryan STM-2S from Testors at 1/48

Painted as a training Aircraft for the Netherland MLD in Indies in 1942

The interior has been created from scratch...

Engine added, well a mock up since I did'nt have a Menasco !

Rigging has been made following photos on the net, the diorama base has been done just for the fun of it

I've got some pleasure in participating a GB, it was the first time for me !

This is my rendition of the Donnet-Lévêque seaplane.  Designed in 1912 by Frenchman Denhaut and Swiss Donnet, the Austro-Hungarian Navy bought 4, (numbers 8 & 12 - Type Cs, and numbers 10 & 11 - Type As) which it promptly copied, building 4 more. 3 more copies followed later, they liked them so much! 

 The aircaft depicted, number 10, was a Type A which had wing-warping, (although photos show it seems to have been converted to ailerons at some point, so that is how I modeled it) and entered service on 4th January 1913. Originally, the only markings carried where the red-white-red on the rudder and a black number 10, also on the rudder. The white "10" on the nose and the Austrian Coat-of-Arms on the tail were added per an order dated 2nd May 1913. From November 1913 a letter was added to the number on the nose.  (Sources: French Aircraft of the First World War, Davilla & Soltan; Seaplanes of Bocche, Ciglic).

 The kit is the Libramodels Vacform in 1:72 with a Small Stuff resin engine.

Good morning my lovely Float plane fellows. As not very well anticipated I have a completed my entry to this my first ever group build about a month early. 

To be fair It does seem to have dragged on over the last few weeks but it's been a joy to tally along with your good selves over the past weeks. I shall be doing some more of these GB thingies for sure. Any way lets cut to the chase eh.

Here is my finished girl not quite Elizabeth Taylor, maybe more Paul Newman in brooding black? either way

 

I present the Catalina PBY-5 "BLACK CAT" by Academy 1/48

 

Tamiya acrylics.

Vallejo metal colour acrylics.

Tamiya weathering pigments.

Flory weather washes.

Glue, sweat, blood and tears.

Red wine. ( Rioja or Malbec )

Good company along the way.

 

Not much scratch built stuff as the kit itself was rather good as you can see in the WIP found here.

Without further ado I bring you the Black Cat. ( I'm going to miss that little emoticon )

 

My initial intention was for this to be a venture into weathering and salt weathering techniques on top of doing an all black bird which has always been a thing I've wanted to tackle. As it happened lots and lots of new ideas were had even if they didn't quite make it through to the final result. I'm happy with the way she turned and had a great larf to boot. (which is the whole point right? )  Thanks for looking, I'll add a proper sign off in the WIP.

This was supposed to be a nice quick easy build while I was working away from home for a few days, well that plan quickly evaporated. 

 

Lots of filler later, plus Humbrol enamels with hairy stick, and a few improvisations along the way and it's done. Yippee

Ok...she's done.  Rigged, trolleyed, even a nifty backdrop from Noy's Miniatures.   I know, it's not a seascape, but I think it fits alright.  I build these things for fun and I am always amazed at the level of craftsmanship I find on this forum.  Inspiring.

 

AZ Model's Morane WR, as the Swedish Thulin 'B'.  Pretty much OOB.  Rigged with a combo of EZ Line and sprue; weathered with oils; the trolley is from the Eastern Express Hansa-Brandenburg kit painted with Vallejo Deck Tan and Gunmetal as is the small 'lobster pot' holding the tail.  It was a nice little kit and I have enjoyed this GB immensely!  This is my second (and last) for this GB so I am heading over to Matchbox to start my Gladiator Mk.1 in French livery.  For your perusal and enjoyment...

Curtiss SO3C Seamew

Sword 1/72

This was a build to help me get back In the groove following a break from the hobby. It certainly helped! 

The Sword kit is a typical short run kit with decent mouldings and some lovely resin parts. It all went together well enough with the only addition from me being some masking tape seat belts. In the main I used Vallejo Modelair and Tamiya acrylics.

Hello all!

 

Here is my completed floatplane, The Burgess-Dunne. These were continually being modified, crashed, rebuilt and remodified, and references were scarce for a particular airframe. The kit was the Scaleplanes 1/72 Vacform, and I scratchbuilt the engine and fuel tank. I could not see any markings on images on the web, so I did not have to figure them out! 

Thanks to everyone who gave encouragement during the build, and what a fabulous GB this has been, you have all been great!

Douglas DT 2 C, a torpedo-bomber development of Douglas DWC. US designed and Norwegian licence production. Equipped with Armstrong-Siddeley Panther engine. Scheme from April 1940, Norway. This "84" survived German attack on 9th April and then was captured. Scratch conversion of Williams Bros Douglas DWC.

At long last, what feels like months after effectively finishing, I've reattached the odd tiny part that fell off and taken some pictures. Finding somewhere to get natural light at this time of year is hard in this house, hence the thoroughly un-sealike backdrop! This was my first ever float- or sea-plane build, so thanks to the wonderful GB hosts for both inspiration and encouragement!

Evening All,

 

Here is my completed contribution to the GB: the Zeppelin Lindau (Dornier) Rs II late in its career. I apologise now for the photo backgrounds but as I explained in the build thread the light and weather at the moment are very poor and I have had problems taking pictures. The size of the model does not help either! I have not included my usual notes on the type - I will do so when I post photos in the RFI section of this site, so if you want to know more about this aircraft I refer you to there. In the meantime I hope that these are not too many pictures.....
