rob Lyttle
I got around to building this blast from the past.... Some serious issues with the kit. Having done the revell kit, and the Kittyhawk single seater in 1/48, the inaccurate and inadequate parts were obvious. I tried to address some of them, and with a decent clear stand supplied in the box, I decided to go for wheels up. I managed to get 6 pictures outdoors before a random gust tipped her over on the pilot tube! I'll stretch another one (No idea where the piece went..... parallel universe, maybe?) But I've got a big question, I'll ask after the pictures...... The thing is, about the photo recon. attachment up front. It came as an option in the kit for a USAF camo RF101B. My sparse info suggests that the Canadian planes went back to US for updates and conversion. So, the USAF got some, at least for the national guard, BUT.... Did any go back to Canada, and if so, did they get painted? Or fly for a while in nmf? I have the replacement panel, and I'm considering retro fitting the original nose for a CF101B, but no ordnance, the underside between the strakes is completely blank. Any feedback, comments, historical information and suggestions would be most welcome. It's not a great build, but it is mine and I ought to give it a decent go!
Darby
That thing on the nose does look weird and I'm no expert but it's always good to see a Matchbox kit done.
Tony Edmundson
A Canadian Voodoo with no IR seeker would be from the first batch received. The box top shows a Voodoo with the IR seeker. Second batch Voodoos had that seeker. No, Canadian Voodoos never had the recon nose. Tony ps. First batch Voodoos were NMF Edited August 26, 2017 by Tony Edmundson Because
rob Lyttle
Darby, I can't say I'd recommend this kit, but it is what it is. 28 minutes ago, Tony Edmundson said: No, Canadian Voodoos never had the recon nose. Thanks for the info, Tony. I had a hunch that may be the case. Can I infer from your notes that the second batch, with the sensor, were all painted? I think I may have a go at re-doing the nose at some point. That fitting really is a bit of a barnacle on her graceful lines. One thing that Matchbox did include was a pair of access ladders. So I worked them up a little and donated them to the revell plane. Edited August 26, 2017 by rob Lyttle
Tony Edmundson
Second batch Canadian Voodoos were first painted Al, then later painted 'Canadian Voodoo Grey' similar to Boeing Grey. Tony(I'm miles from my references this week)
Dazey
Impressive work, and it looks good displayed in-flight. Would you happen to have any links to decent tutorials on applying foil for NMF (I'm thinking Foiling for Dummies)? I tried "riveting" for the first time on my last model, so thought the next fiddly thing to try is foil... By the way, your wind gust comment made me think how you had fixed the plane to the stand. I couldn't quite tell from the photos, but I got the idea from BM to use rare earth magnets for this purpose. It works a treat. Kind regards, David
rob Lyttle
Thanks for that, David, I'll get back to you on that. Had a bit of success with the kitchen foil, I think. So, I foiled all the top surface of the wing, worked up a bit of a shine. Then I laid the kitchen foil upside down and traced the panel lines, and cut it out ( not the little panels near the tip - trim those out later) SORRY...... wrong post!!😠 Doh Edited August 28, 2017 by rob Lyttle

David, I'm making enquiries how to put a link here that would take you to another thread that explains what I do. Most seem to use kitchen foil and varnish or glue. I'm a bit otherwise. I use sticky back builder's foil and work it quite hard. I did build threads on the Kittyhawk 1/48 and revell 1/72 Voodoos and I'll put links if I can learn how to do them. You're welcome to search for them in Work in progress.

Alpha Delta 210
Great work on such an old kit! (These are the sort of nostalgic builds that I love to see.) Shame about the cross-wind accident, but at least the da,age was minor.

There's something rewarding in it that all the resin and aftermarket expenditure just can't match - but you wouldn't want to be dealing with the hassle all the time! Have you seen the airfix Bloodhound Missile build that's on Work In Progress? Nostalgia in a box!!
rob Lyttle
Just a quick update... Pleased to say I finally got around to doing a makeover on the nose! Extraction of the PR lantern wasn't that bad, and the normal panel slipped in easy. Looking so much better already! Little bit of foil to blend in and a new pitot sensor and she'll be good to go.
