HMS Queen Elizabeth to enter Pompey tomorrow

That's cool.  Shame I'm hundreds of miles away. I noticed the drone exclusion order... wonder whether they'll be shooting any that don't take heed down to keep the aircraft safe? :wicked:

All she needs is a nuclear reactor power plant, a couple of squadrons of Sea Harriers, F18's (or similar), Helicopters and three or four sister ships.

I'd settle for three or four escorts: think even that may stretch our modern emaciated Royal Navy.

great, would have gone down but guess what? we've got the Dragon in Law for lunch, they call me lucky ! :raincloud:

agree Seahawk, when the George W was in a couple of weeks back, her escort was a tad less than our entire destroyer fleet, who or what is going to protect HMS QE?

I think the F-18's would fall off on landing (no thick string for the 'ooks) and couldn't take off anyway (no downhill ramp).

Still it's a step in the right direction to establishing a 'blue(ish)' water navy.

Could we at least have a plastic F-35B on deck for scale!

Did anyone else watching the BBC TV coverage of the arrival end up , like me, shouting at the TV every time they said there were "No Aircraft on board Yet" when plainly <sorry> there were the Merlin's sat on the deck which are Rotary-wing aircraft.

What it didn't have on deck were the fixed-wing aircraft otherwise known as aeroplanes (this is a RN ship so even though they will be American built they will NOT be Airplanes).

Its not just the BBC TV that gets it wrong, listening to the radio on my way to work I heard the statement that "there were no planes on board." I'd put serious money on the fact that there were planes on board but they'd be in Artificer's tool box rather than the hangar or flight deck.

Thank God they didn't describe this ships aircraft (Rotary and Fixed-winged or the ship for that matter) as Platforms or I may have had a coronary.

Now where's that carer, it's time for my medication.

Aircraft, as in fixed or rotary wing, do not normally remain with the ship when returning to home ports.  They disembark to their respective air stations once they are within flying range, so the commentators have it wrong anyway.

Actually Sinnerboy their idea is to transport a very large hedge around her so nobody can see her!!!! LOL

If it's any consolation I see them everyday, as well as other 'flying stuff.'

To be honest, when I saw the coverage this morning my first thought was; I wonder how long they've been doing 'clean ship' and then, I bet 'Specials' was something.

I was also peeved that the brainless BBC Breakfast hosts kept saying that HMS Queen Elizabeth was a boat. It's a SHIP!

Hi Learstang,

From what I understand the venting and running of exhaust to the funnels originally lead to the two islands concept being considered. Then the concept was further developed so that the front Island is for ship control and being so forward allows better views over the bow, whilst the rear island is for 'Flyco' and ideally placed roughly mid deck. The islands themselves are separated by one of the deck edge lifts. Both islands have a degree of duplication in roles in case of damage. The more I think about it and look at the design the more I'm convinced this is a good way to go, and I think other future carriers will also adapt similar layouts. It's what you can't see though that puts the QE in a slightly different class and that's the below deck automation for arm's supply to the flight deck and also the new ship to ship transfer systems, this brings the crew numbers down to a roughly a third or less of a large US carrier, so you should look at the QE as an advanced prototype, something that the press here in the UK can't get their head around at the moment ! Sigh !

Oh and the final thing......................Does anyone else think that things are now really starting to look like the fabulous creations from Gerry Andersons Thunderbirds, Capatain Scarlet etc from the 1960's !! Who would have thought puppets were that advanced eh !!
