Plumbum
I am starting my Trumpeter 1/350 USS England kit and using it to make the USS Buckley, lead ship of it's class and it's adventure with U-66 spurred on the movie "The Enemy Below". Unfortunately they didn't use the Buckley in the film, they used the USS Whitehurst and gave it a fictional name as being the USS Haynes. My build will be OOB and have the same armament it had with it's encounter with U-66 on May 5-6, 1944. Off to a slow but steady start.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr Buckley 2 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the hull started. I am using the full hull, and have the rudders, prop shafts, upper and lower hull pieces all glued up. Once they are set up I will mask for the hull red then the other colors for an MS 22 scheme.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr 1

Plumbum
The lower hull has been painted Tamiya dull red. I now need to go to my LHS and buy the grays for MS-22.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Rob 1
I'll be watching with interest - might be a nice little kit to have a go at myself some time.
pacificmustang
ill be watching too, as I want to do this kit as an introduction to ship modelling Bruce
Plumbum
Thanks, I got introduced into ships with Revell's old 1/535 era boxscale kits. One I was fond of was a later release, the 1/249 Buckley. Done about 5 or so years ago.---John Buckley 3 by jvandeu53, on Flickr 6
Plumbum
The lower color has been sprayed on the hull, Navy Blue but to me it looks gunship gray. Above this, yet to be sprayed, on the hull is a wedge of haze gray then all the vertical walls will be haze gray also. The horizontal surfaces, decks or floors to us land lubbers, will be another dark gray, deck blue. The stripe, or boot, between the red and Navy Blue will be a black decal stripe, similar to the Revell Buckley pictured above. One thing I forgot was to scratch build a sonar dome, as seen in the Revell Buckley above, just below the DE 51 decal. I'll do that now while the paint is drying.---John Buckley 5 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the sonar dome built and painted. I had found some information years ago so I dug out a sketch showing the dome and a profile picture showing it's location, the profile picture was roughly in 1/350 scale.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr Sonar_Dome_Buckley by jvandeu53, on Flickr USS Buckley DE-51 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the haze gray painted above the navy blue on the hull. I can now paint and add the deck. I still need to add the black stripe decal, boot, to the top of the red painted area, it will also hide the bleed through where the tape wasn't burnished down as good as it should have been.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
The deck is now deck blue and glued on as are the screws. I also assembled the stand, painted it haze gray 5-H and glued it to the hull.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the secondary decks painted deck blue and need to mask them off and do the haze gray. I painted all the rest of the deck structures haze gray and while waiting for things to dry and be masked I built the funnel and tried one of the PE k gun racks. I have a PE bending tool but these are very basic bends and all I needed was an X Acto blade to hold the while bending.---John Buckley 12 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
Plumbum
I have the k guns installed and one of the PE racks painted and installed over one of them. I also have started work on the mid ship deck and armament.---John Buckley 13 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
The mid ship deck is on along with some other small items. I am still working on the k gun racks.---John Buckley 16 by jvandeu53, on Flickr
73north
Lovely so far , you are doing a great job I have the 1/350 Eskimo Kit ( and a nice kit , except that dear Trumpeter deciding that the Tribals had an 8 barrel pom-pom mounting ( it was actually a quad ) and they used German Ships boats - and a lack of sheer on the bow - I recommend using ' Shapeway's bespoke Tribal Class boats - instead . Plumbum
Thanks for the information, I'll keep that in mind as I have a fondness to the Tribal class, Eskimo in particular. Here's the depth charge cages in PE.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr

73north
you are doing a lovely job 1 question - did the kit display stand fit the Model well , please ? I only ask as the Trumpeter stands have a reputation ( apparently ) of not fitting very well ??
Plumbum
No, the stand didn't fit well . The stand had quite a radius in it and the bottom of the hull was more flat than radiused. I have all the guns now on and the funnel installed. I also built the mast using the PE radar and built two more k gun racks.---John OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr 4
Plumbum
I am almost finished. The only parts left to add are 2 k gun cages on the port side, the mast, the stripe above the waterline on the port side and stern then some rigging. I still have to find a number and name for the hull also.---John Buckley 22 by jvandeu53, on Flickr OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA by jvandeu53, on Flickr

Plumbum
Thanks, all the parts are done. I just need to rig and get Buckley decals somewhere. Unfortunately I live in Florida and there's a big times hurricane headed my way, may have to evacuate and abandon this ship.---John Buckley 33 by jvandeu53, on Flickr Buckley 35 by jvandeu53, on Flickr Buckley 36 by jvandeu53, on Flickr

73north
if you are still searching for a decal flag - I can recommend the BECC Fabric Flags http://www.becc.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d33.html USA20 - Stars and Stripes ( the size you need is Type AAA ( 10mm long ) War Period 48 Stars 1912-1959 and Stockists http://www.becc.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d45.html Edited September 9, 2017 by 73north
