I really thought we were going to get a 'don't ask me how I know'  then Ced....!!

Good luck with the straps!

That's looking great Ced, can't wait to see the camo. The 'Remount' sounds brilliant as a mask adhesive.

Another reason I like to paint masked stuff 'backwards' (darkest to lightest) is that it's much easier to clean up paint 'runs' under the masks if you do the lighter color last. Imagine having to paint out a bunch black 'runs' over white paint - it's a pain, and it never seems to match.

Fast and steady progress here, Ced! I see you got nice and even coats with Lifecolor, but you probably need a bit more of that "bottled patience" we talked about some time ago :D to get more variations. It's a learning curve, but I can say I'm very happy with Lifecolor now

Ciao

A hint for the straps - try annealing them in a candle flame so that they lose their spring. Makes brass bits much more fun to work with. Obviously, hold the parts in a pair of tweezers, not your delicate little pinkies.

Great work on the little jigger thus far Ced!

Thanks Keith - straps soon! :)

Thanks Cookie - great tip, darkest to lightest, got it :)

Thanks Benedikt - OK, the barrels are finished! :)

Thanks Giorgio - you're right, I need more patience. I'm still thinking "that's not covering anything" and start blasting. I must build up, patiently. I may also be thinning too much :)

Thanks Rob - great tip. If the straps don't behave themselves they will be put to the flame! :)

Thanks Tony - kind of you :)

Rushing the post so you can see the results. Masks on early this morning:

Lifecolor DG and Cookie's thinners in the airbrush and mixed in the pipette. Funny stuff this Lifecolor, almost as though it has detergent in it. Bubbly:

NOT a blocked airbrush (I haven't started yet), it's just the paint. Weird. When you shake the pot and open it there's usually a film over the opening that's really hard to pop. Ho hum.

DG on. I realised at this point that any black basing had been covered by the grey so I forgot about variation and just went for good coverage:

Then I had to wait for the paint to dry. One of the reasons I like acrylics is this isn't long. Make a cup of tea... check email... ENOUGH! Off with the masks:

Ta dah! Touching up to do and I'm not convinced by the 'dual whites'.

Mrs B back at lunchtime so there may be a bit of a gap.

That looks great Ced; a little touching up on the stripes and it will be 'there' :).

A tip to avoid the bubbles; you're right , unlike many other acrylic paints with their tiny 'dropper' tops, Lifecolor has quite a wide top. Airfix acrylics are also a bit like this; I've had so many set solid that I'm in therapy for it . I've had quite a few Revell acrylics set almost solid in the 'cube jar' too.

For these three paints, and Agama, I now avoid shaking or inverting. I use an electric stirring device. They can be bought very cheaply now. Nevertheless, for those on a budget, I will pop over to the 'tools' section in a little while, and show how one can easily be made. Very 'Blue Peter', although unfortunately I don't get to use a pair of Val's old knickers. To be honest I'd prefer to use Lesley Judd's kno...

:o.

Electric stirrer technique.

Just go around the paint jar, round and round, carefully up and down a little, avoiding bubbles. All will be smooth. Pretend you're trying to make Angel Delight, but smooth, perhaps as a luxury topping for a nice Sherry Trifle .

Butterscotch flavour is good for this. The trifle that is. I mean, you can use your home made electric paint stirrer with Angel Delight too, or whipping cream, if you are short on a decent whisk, to make scale trifle portions to go with your scale beer :thumbsup2: .

Anyway, look out in the tools section, I even have movies showing what can go wrong .

Best regards

Well, that's an hour I won't get back...

PC first posted about the tape here and used it for a Sky band (oh no, BM slow again) and revealed his stripes later - nice!

I've searched and searched and I think the problem may be that 3M don't sell their 'inch' range in Europe. Searching for 6.35mm didn't yield results either.

In for a penny cent, in for a pound Euro I kept going and found one supplier here. Tape's cheap enough (£4 odd) but they only ship by courier... ho hum. Although it says the tape is 6mm I haven't found this range elsewhere so I've assumed this is 'approximate' and ordered a roll - the temptation to order more to justify the postage would have left me with 120' of tape and I don't expect to live long enough to use it!

I'll let you know when it arrives.

Hi Ced

I'm a bit of a lurker on your builds - enjoy them (and the associated chatter re BBQs, beer, etc!) very much, but don't often have anything to contribute. However . . .

I started searching for the 6.35mm 3M tape, and found this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-Vinyl-Tape-471-06405-Fine-Line-Paint-Masking-Inc-Striping-6-35mm-x-32-9m-/332337380031?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

It's vinyl tape, not sure if the tape PC mentioned is too, but it's the right width. About to click 'buy' so I'll have to see what it's like.

Great work on the Spit!

Best wishes

Jim

No, it's just Italian ( sorry Giorgio ) but I like it.Thanks for the tip TT I have an electric stirring device also, bought about 40 years ago when I saw it advertised as a cocktail stirrer.

Thanks Simon :)

Thanks TT - electric stirrer? I have a Badger one so I might give that a try. :) Butterscotch Angel Delight :Tasty:

Thanks Matt - I love acrylics. I don't think I have the patience to wait for enamels to dry; I do have some Colourcoats to try so we'll see! :)

Hi Jim - lurk away! :)

Thanks for the link to the tape. I have a strange idea that PC mentioned that too and liked it because it was vinyl and therefore bendy... I've found some of the green paper type in the UK so we'll have a look when it arrives. Please let us know how you get on with the vinyl stuff - it's more readily available in the UK.

Thanks John - cocktail stirrer? Very Bond... :D

Thanks Leon :)

I've rolled the straps with the end of a knife handle:

Nothing more on those until I can get the measure of the racks.

I've sprayed the model with Klear in preparation for transfers - see, I do learn, just slowly... Then I realised that the barrel set only comes with idents and serial transfers so I pulled some spares out of the stash.

Then I noticed this:

See the deliberate mistake? I've forgotten that the D-day stripes on 'Junior' weren't painted over the idents. Rats.

I've masked up the area and splurged the first coat of Lifecolor over the area.

More later.

A good solution to the barrel straps Ced :thumbsup2: .

The photo etch rolling tools look just gorgeous, Very tempting but not a cheap item. Christmas soon .. :hmmm::santa: 🎁

It's good to find another fan of Butterscorch Angel Delight. It's probably not the healthiest of foods, but I recently had to order some from a specialist British food mail order shop here.

https://www.britishcornershop.co.uk/

Lyle's Golden Syrup, Henderson's Relish, Jacob's Cream Crackers and more were also ordered. High prices, but worth it for a little taste of everyday things we can't get easily :chef: .

I made the stirrer using the electric eraser Ced :). I started a thread in tools. Unfortunately my photos of the wet and dry paper disks, stuck to the rubber tips won't download from Photomuppet :weep:.

I do have photographs (and movies :D) of the ingenious stirrer attachment. That will be posted tomorrow,

Well spotted on the camouflage beneath the 'J'.

Best regards

Would have choked on my beer f I wasn't working!  Recipe tips and modelling tips in one post! Fantastic Tony, keep them up, but please don't get them mixed up, roast sprue doesn't sound that appealing! 😉

Thanks Johnny :) My earlier comment about 'special subject. special attention' came back to bite me... had to be done (see below)

Thanks TT :) We're lucky here as you can buy a TUB, yes a tub, of B.A.D. (oh dear, that's not a god abbreviation is it) from a major supermarket for £1. Every little counts, as they say :D

Aha! Another use for the electric eraser! That should shut up the naysayers!

Thanks Ian :D

Looking tasty Ced. The foaming Lifecolor DG and thinners reminds me of the reaction I had with Vallejo thinned with water - took on the appearance of Cresta. Went on ok though.

Thanks Tomo :) Weird stuff eh?

The not-overpainted ident rectangles have been painted (still drying here):

I've also applied the serials as the 'Jr' goes over the top.

Transfers tomorrow, hopefully.

Oh gor-blimey Ced you really don't do the old aneurism much good do you, I nearly spluttered even though 'red faced excitement' is now on my ban list

Good catch noticing, is it the same on t'other side?

I bet you only masked the immediate area again too, you love living on the edge now you are out of the cut and thrust of earning your own wages

:)

S'looking very like a Spitsfirey thing

Nice

Nice save on the non-stripey portion

Excellent result on the camouflage painting, very smooth  Next time you'll be able to manage subtle variations with Lifecolor paints, I know :)

Thanks Johnny - had to be done :)

Thanks Bill :) Yes, same on the other side, although luckily it's all grey. I did only mask the immediate area but I brush painted - too lazy to mask up. Now I think about it that might have been quicker as Lifecolor needs multiple coats when brushed. Lesson learned (oh no, not another one!)

Thanks Giorgio - I'll try variation again and try to have more patience :)

Thanks Alan :) I still can't 'react' to your posts... do you have a special lock on or something?

Thanks Martian :)

This morning I've applied the transfers:

The idents and serials are provided with the barrel AM and are really nice - they settled well without creasing.

The roundels and fin flash are Xtradecal and require some rougher treatment... quite thick aren't they? They've been rolled, pricked and brushed and they're still not settling so I've applied some MicroSol. I'll have to leave this now until that's dry.
