Hi all,

photos of a sunken plane wreck on Palau achipelego have been doing the rounds of the usual online tabloid newspapers and 'bored at work' websites. Lot's of discussion about what type of aircraft it is. Some have commented that it was a Aichi E13 'Jake', but I don't know. What you do think?

Staring perhaps too hard at the bottom photo I wonder whether I can actually see the v-shaped float struts under the port wing, which would be further evidence in support of a Jake?

By the way, the Daily Mail online ran these pictures under the heading 'remains of WWII Jet aircraft...':rage:

regards,

Will

I think the evidence is irrefutable that this is Amelia Earhart's plane .....

No doubt that that's what TIGHAR would have us believe!

But seriously I'm of the opinion that it is very likely the remains of a Jake.

Is the fixed surface between the flap and the aileron a useful differentiator?  Usually the flap goes all the way out to the aileron.

Is that a fixed surface...or just the last few aileron ribs still hanging on for dear life?  ^_^

It definitely looks like an E13A "Jake" to me.

That's a lovely rendering, but the odd bit sticking out between the aileron and flap--possibly "inspired" by the old Nichimo 1/48 kit--is fictitious. The fairing over the wing fold joint did no carry aft beyond the main wing structure.

Sorry, I took this photo as a photo of real thing...
