Wee Beastie
Cockpit tub completed.Ā Painted with Hataka Light Ghost Grey, and detailed with their black. The Eduard set has really brought the best out of the somewhat bland kit supplied one. The Quickboost seat lovely, with nice crisp detailing.A little bit of wash, and some drybrushing, and it's ready to be installed into the fuselage.Untitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on Flickr
John
Watching with great interest. I built the Airfix boxing of the SMER/OEZ kit years ago and finished it in the supplied NVA markings. I had the Eduard set for that kit, which was one of the very first ones they made.Ā This kit looks very like the Trumpeter MiG-15bis in terms of the parts breakdown.Ā Ā JohnĀ

Yes, you're right, it's very similar build-wiseĀ to the Trumpeter MiG-15. I built Trumpy's MiG-15 last year, and that was a nice build.
Wee Beastie
Engine and exhaust painted, and engine installed into the rear fuselage. Note that part of the engine is seen in the airbrake opening. Painted with Vallejo Metallic Colour, and given a dark wash. The rest of the kit is now assembled, and the Master Model pitots and gun barrels fitted.Ā Also finished off the undercarriage, which just needs a coat of matt, which I'll do when I coat the finished kit, at the end of the build. The primer is applied which is UMP's black primer. I've also managed to get hold of a set of Print-Scale MiG-17 decals, primarily for the stencils.Untitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on Flickr

Wee Beastie
With the primer now dried fully, I've done some pre-shading with some light grey.On some of the leading edges of the wings, tail fin, nose, and top of the fuselage, I have sprayed some dark aluminium. This is because I am going to have my first attempt atĀ someĀ "salt chipping". Once the aluminium has dried, i sprayed some plain water on to the ally areas, then sprinkled some sea salt. This seems to have taken well, and the excess has been bushed off. Ā Fingers crossed it work out okay in the end.Untitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on Flickr
Wee Beastie
As you can see, the camouflage is done, and its different! The North Vietnamese had lots of varied camo schemes, but until recently I hadn't realised this one existed. So, of course, it had to be done.Airbrushed with Hataka RedLine acrylics A042 P.R. Blue, and A505 B6 RN Medium Blue.Ā For the masking, I used Ammo Mig's masking putty, which doesn't leave any marks on the paint. I have also removed the salt, to reveal the metal colour underneath. I'm reasonably happy with my first attempt at this, but I know I can do better next time. Finished off with some Alclad Aqua Gloss, and once it's dried fully, I'm ready for the decals.Untitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on Flickr

It doesn't leave any marks, and is easier to shape. Ā It is self levelling though, so ask the night before a spray session, as you find the following morning, some if the putty will have "dripped" off!
Wee Beastie
All the decals have been applied. These are PrintScale's, as are the stencils.A couple of coats more of Alclad Aqua Gloss varnish applied, and then a wash of UMP's Dark Dirt.Untitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on FlickrUntitled by ian gaskell, on Flickr

Hewy
Like it ian, very nice, i have some of that ump's dark dirt Ā so I'm not concerned about the last picture, I've found it goes really well over bmf finishes too, Ā and buffed with a bit of damp first, then dry Ā kitchen towelĀ Glynn
