Academy 1/72nd F-15C

Recommended Posts

For this GB I will using the Academy 1/72nd kit and Two Bobs decal sheet to make an F-15C of the California ANG that had once belonged to the one of the Aggressor Sqns at Nellis AFB. Having made a few years ago a brown camoed aircraft using the Afterburner decal sheet, this time around I will be making an aircraft a blue camoed one. The decals from Two Bobs are sized for the Hasegawa kit but I think that the only decals that will matter on this score are the eagle (bird) tail markings which are also supplied with the kit decal sheet.

The kit

Thanks for your comments. It is good to see these colourful aircraft with Sqn markings on and carrying a weapons load. I have actually got some work done on this build after finally being able to get some Halfords white plastic primer for the intakes. I have also made and fitted the cockpit, plus after a bit of research the tail hook fairings from the upper and lower fuselage parts. I will hopefully get the fuselage together and progress will continue and a better pace.

I will be honest and did not take much notice of the intakes interiors as I do not think that they will be seen that much when all is built up.

As with the build I have added the upper and forward fuselage parts, plus the lower wings. There is a biggish step n the forward fuselage area now that they are joined together which with later. I have also cut the ailerons so that they now droop as they would when the aircraft is at rest.

Starting to look Eagle shaped now. Like the ailerons I have also moved the rudders a little. I was a little disappointed in the way that the nose cone is fitted to the aircraft in that there is no positive location for the part just a drawing in the instructions as to which way up it goes. I have also started to fit the engines together, which takes some doing to get all the parts to line up.

After a break being on holiday I have now finally got the darker blue painted on. I took several coats to get the colour density that I wanted, which took a lot longer than the lighter blue although I was using paint from the same manufacturer for both. So it is on with the metal areas around the engine and tail, plus the dark grey to the nose cone and wing leading edges.

Thank you.

After a break with myself being on holiday I am now back with this one. I have finally finished the painting which yet again took a while with the paint on the nose cone. Tonight I have started to apply the decals with the ones on that tail and I will have more photos soon.

I am using the Hakata USAF Aggressor Sqn Paint Set No2 (Red Label), which covers all the colours that I am using and to be honest some paints cover the model very good (The light Blue) while others (The Dark Blue especially) do not. But they are slowly getting the job done.

After a mammoth session over the weekend I managed to get all the decals applied. This was fine until it came to some of the smaller stencils mainly due to the fact that Two Bobs instructions were not that brilliant so I was looking at the kit instructions plus those from  the similar Afterburner sheet. Also some of the stencils especially the "No Step" ones seemed to disappear when applied to the model. Still they are on so that is all that matters to me. I have also started the weapons whish is also a bit strange. There are 4 AMRAAMs and 4 AIM-9Xs to which Academy would only have you fitting these to the wing pylons, but obviously not all at once. In their instructions they do not show anything being fitted to the fuselage stations. I will be fitting x4 AMRAAMs to the fuselage and fit x2 AMRAAMs and x2 AIM-9Xs to the wing pylons along with a couple of fuel tanks. For this to happen I am borrowing a couple of AMRAAMs from a Hasegawa weapons set. Well more to get on with and less time to do it.

Slowly getting there. I have now sprayed on a matt varnish, fitted the engines, U/C, updated aerials and weapons pylons. Although not showing a photo of I have applied decals to all the weapons, and there is a slight difference between to Hasegawa and Kit AMRAAMs, but luckily there are 4 from the kit and 2 Hasegawa ones. So I will be fitting the kit ones to the fuselage, which strangely enough there are no positions marked for these on the fuselage, nor is there any mention of fitting them there in the instructions, which again I find odd as most Eagles have missiles fitted here. I normally flatting the wheels slightly by rubbing the model backwards and forwards over  sheet of wet and dry, but the nose wheel looks a bit on the flimsy side. Does anyone have any better ideas than my original to carry out this procedure. Well I must continue with the final push to get this one finished for the weekend.
