Academy P38 Lightning, now with Eduard Fw190R8

Recommended Posts

Now that I getting close to the end of the Hawker Typhoon, I decided to make a start on my next one, it is the rather nice Academy P38 Lightning. I will be building it in Chinese National Air Force colours as used in the civil war. I have the Blue Rider decal sheet which has the decasl for the F5E recon variant but has enough other decals for me do do the normal P38L variant by using the one for other fighters. I also have the Eduard PE set and Master barrels replacement set (after trying these on the Typhoon I think these will be an automatic upgrade when available). So here is the inevetible kit pictures and the start I made last night waiting for the oil wash on the Tiffy to dry.

Thats it so far, the PE has been well fitting so far even the five parts that went into the wheel well by needed no trimming to fit. I need to find the correct USAF interior green as I only have RAF interior green before I can go any further on the cockpit, if anyone knows the Tamiya number tht would be helpful. As usual any comment are welcome.

Been a bit of a delay as my compressor died, but i finally got a nice new one! So small update as I just sprayed the cockpit and wheel wells ready for the next stage of assembly, I made a cockpit green by mixing XF4 and XF1 roughly 80/20% similar to the factory.

I can start with the coloured PE cockpit once the paint has fully hardened, wasn't sure about all the PE in the wheel wells before painting but it starting to look convincing now it has some colour.

First time using coloured PE so I am happy with the results, also test fitted cockpit into wing assembly and test fitted one of the engine nacelles. The fit looks pretty good if it goes together like this for rest of the build should be done fairly quickly for me, and the wife gave me a Roden Dr1 as we'd been watching something on tv about WW1 and I said I'd made one as a kid so she got this for me.

So, been a while since last post, progress slow due to lots of overtime, SWMBO, dogs and an Eduard FW190 A8 bought from ebay for £7!. P38 has been assembled, primed, filed, re-scribed, re-primed and sprayed green although I not sure if its dark enough. FW190 has also been primed, although I think the reviews for this kit are all great, i found it unnecessarily complicated and the instructions vague.

the 38 looks extremely tasty already.

I have two of the same kit in the stash....Pacific and European versions.

Looking forward to having a go after seeing your efforts particularly with the etch

Keep up the great work

Cheers

The etch has made a big difference in the cockpit and wheel wells so its definitely worth doing, but be warned the joint on the nose took quite a bit of work to correct and there around a dozen fishing weights in the nose so it not a tail sitter. That aside if I could find another of these kits I would do more.

Wasn't happy with the green on the P38, to flat and monotone, so done a bit of rework and pre shading. Also sprayed the FW190's yellow band.

Slight problem to report, started applying the Blue Rider decals last night and they have no adhered to the model at all! So bad I could left them off the surface with a scalpel. Looks like I be looking for a new set of decals before I can go further.

Some good fortune, I tried the decals meant for a Polikarpov I 16 and they have performed much better. The wing roundels are slightly smaller but have adhered well. Also very happy with the pre-shading results. Still have the tail and under side decalls to put on, before weathering can start.

Started the decal on the Fw10, disappointed with the Eduard decal though. They are extremely thin and several just folded when trying to position, but it starting to look nice with the main deals in place.

If anyone of any tricks to use with the Eduard decals please let me know.

Finished decaling the Wurger and flat coated as well, also flat coated the wheels and spinner. First part of lightnings undercarriage fitted.

Pleased to report the lightning is now on its wheels, just undercarriage doors, guns, bombs, props, super chargers and last bits of glass to go! The Wurger has had its prop, fuel tank and rocket rails fitted and exhaust/rocket staining sprayed. Hopeful both will be finished by December.

You have really put in a lot of work on your P-38.  I think you over did the pre-shading though.  Next time you might want to try a different color, something a little more close to the final color, but still somewhat darker and perhaps a finer spray tip so that the lines are not so exaggerated (large, over sized width) in appearance.
