SimonL Posted July 25, 2017 Share Posted July 25, 2017 My next project. It's so little! My plan is to finish it in a Caunter scheme (to use up the paints I mixed for my recent Matilda). Thanks to @Bullbasket I have some idea where I am going with the exterior, not so certain on the interior. I am assuming that (and the underneath), would be left as there were "off the boat". First, I couldn't resist the obligatory coin comparison. For those in the UK, the Aussie 5 cent piece is just a fraction smaller than a penny. As has been said before elsewhere, the canvas cover for the back of the Tilly is rather strangely moulded in transparent plastic, with some visible injector marks (in the inside). I am going to have the back totally enclosed so they will not be a problem,, still it was strange see glue marring the (internal) surface. It went together cleanly though with some Tamiya thin cement. I detached the main parts from the spruce and did a test fit. Some very delicate, fine, moulding (quite a comparison to the Airfix 1:48 Bedford MWD I have just finished). All the injector marks are in places where they will not be seen. SimonL Posted July 27, 2017 Author Share Posted July 27, 2017 So onto construction. First, the tiny fender lights. I almost when cross eye doing this. Made use of a cocktail stick with a little bit of blu-tak to pick up the lights and position them. the fuel tank filler cap was equally tricky, but went together ok. Everrything else slotted together pretty quickly. There were some rather obvious injector pin marks on the floor in front of the seats which rather than fill I just covered with plastic card. Otherwise everything fitted really well, at this point the wheel axles and wheels are not glued. I then dry fitted the four sub assemblies (which I am going to keep separate for painting). After our conversation earlier in the week, it got me thinking after looking at my references, so next time I'm back in Blighty, I will be looking out for one of these, only in 1/35th scale. Sadly only two photos of a Tilly wearing this scheme exist, and I don't think the individual vehicle number is identifiable in either. It's too good not to model though! Interior and underneath of chassis received a couple of coats of homebrew Tamiya Khaki Green 3 (it is not gloss, just wet) while the outsides got their first coat of Portland Stone. In the meantime I painted along the seam of the canvas cover to show where I need to sand. A bit of work with some fine wet'n'dry followed by a couple of coats of paint. Looks pretty good to me. SimonL Posted July 29, 2017 Author Share Posted July 29, 2017 (edited) As it happens @clive_t when I looked at it in the morning, there was still a bit of seam showing so out came the Mr Surfacer. A bit of sanding and that sorted it. Otherwise, just a bit of painting today. A bit of detail painting and dry brushing on the dashboard, although heaven knows it won't be very visible in the finished model (but at least I'll know it's done!) My representation is definitely not accurate, just inspired by various model builds around the 'net. Surprisingly tricky, even with painting the assemblies separately. First stage: And then at the end of the day. A few false starts in places, and the finish is rough in others. A couple of touch ups tomorrow and then the subsequent weathering should hide the worst of them though. So here is where I am at tonight. Also added the exhaust manifold to the underside of the chassis. And then a dry fit so see how everything looks.
