Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" (Hobby Craft 1/72)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my build of the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis" aircraft used by "Chuck" Yeager to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947. It was my entry to the Prototypes, Experimentals, World Firsts & Record Breakers GB.

I used the Hobby Craft 1/72 Bell X-1, which I bought second hand in eBay and built it completely OOB. I didn't apply any weathering as the aircraft, being an experimental machine, was constantly taken care of. It can also be seen as representing the aircraft as displayed in the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., which is clean (though hanging from the ceiling).

The kit is old (1991), has fit problems in the cockpit and the assembly of the main landing gear legs is very fiddly. However, it is well detailed for the scale and the decals behaved acceptably after about 26 years in the box.

The build thread can be found here and my entry to the GB's gallery is here.

That's superb Jaime :worthy: .

Well done for getting it done in time for the end of the Group Build.

No compromise on quality of build at all; it looks great.

The canopy framing looks excellent, as I wrote in the WIP, the orange really looks the part.

:goodjob:

The "framing" on the original X1s was not "framing" in the normal sense. The canopy was actually a single piece of plexiglass. It was not known what effect compressibility might have on the canopy as the aircraft went through the transonic region so stiffeners were added to help prevent the canopy from disintegrating.

One of the later early X1s did away with most of the strengthening straps.

Thank you all for the very kind comments!

Regarding the canopy, the Hobby Craft kit comes with a second unframed canopy to build one of the later X-1.

Cheers

Nice job. I built one of these over twenty years ago. I don't remember it coming with the cockpit interior fittings or the wingtip pitots. I wasn't into masking of canopies at that time and only got around to the black framing a few years ago - by hand!

Hello,Jaime - Great to see you back on radar. Beautifully built and finished with your hallmark detail and expertise, your 'X-1' model is a resplendent tribute to the type.

Superb work as always.

😉👍 All the very best,Paul.

That is very nice. I've built the Tamiya version which is pretty good (although originally not a Tamiya kit).

The Hobbycraft X-1 looks pretty good in its own right.

Tony, Stix, Paul, you're being extremely kind, as always  I chose this kit for it's simplicity and decided to build it OOB because I didn't do much modelling for a while and needed to regain my abilities.

I'll be starting a new build this week, hopefully: an Italeri Mig-29A with lots of detailing stuff. I must do some planning first, so it may take a few days before a start the new WIP.

Cheers

Thank you, CC, very kind!

I used that kit's instructions as a reference for the detailing of the interiors and wheel wells. Do you have a thread of your build? I'd like to see it.

Nice one... Eyestrain special.  The X1 was pretty small... In 1/72 it can't be much bigger than a large dragonfly.  Now you have a good excuse to give SWMBO for building  a 29 to sling it under!

Even though, as a kit it has quite a few inaccuracies, I really like your modelling skills!

Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks a lot for the kind words, Pete! Indeed I have two Academy 1/72 B-29s in the stash :)

Did you include the bit of broom handle Chuck used to close the door

I'm afraid not... This was a purely OOB build.

Very clean and crisp Jamie, I am surprised by the amount of cockpit detail but you have represented it well.

Thank you very much for the kind words! The kit is well detailed. The only problem were some fit difficulties.

Cheers

Simply stunning & jaw dropping--I don't know cool emjois 😮 🙂, so I will say as a guy who prefers tactical schemes, you changed my mind--my only regret is I didn't have the work in progress on my dash board as you built this--thank you for making the time to post!  Red Sox Fan
