SimonL
I am getting addicted to the Tamiya 1:48 scale military vehicles. After a couple of tanks, something a little smaller - a Dingo Mk II scout car. Just two sprues of plastic: And just one set of markings: My challenge this time - my first go at painting figures. The kit comes with two figures, and it would seem a shame not to have a go. An morning at the bench, and already have most of the construction complete. Only slightly tricky part, making sure the figures were assembled so that they fitted correctly inside the vehicle. So onto painting. My understanding is that the base colour for British armoured vehicles in NW Europe in 1944 was SCC15 Olive Drab. I used the following recipe: 5 parts Tamiya XF81 + 1 part Tamiya XF58 + 1 part Tamiya XF71 (recipe found in the following conversation: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234913729-british-ww2-tank-colors/ ) Painting ensued. I am reasonably pleased with my first go at painting figures. They look a bit stark at the moment, but some washes will tone the look down a bit. Only issue so far are some rather visible injector marks on the open roof part. A bit of Mr Surfacer will deal with that, although it will be a fiddly sanding job later. While I wait for the paint to dry, a got the display base sorted. A cheap picture frame was the base, and then some earth and grass coloured scatter did the trick. A bit simplistic, but bette than nothing.
Bullbasket
Good start. The figures look fine. Just be careful when painting the eyes. Don't make the mistake that some people do and putt a blob of white there with a black dot in the middle. It makes it look as though the figure has just had a broom handle rammed up where the sun don't shine! Just a thin white slit with just a hint at the pupil. It should work ok in this scale. Gremlin56
Nice armored cars these, didn't Michael Caine keep hopping in and out of one in "A Bridge too far"?
SimonL
Thanks John. I think what you suggest is beyond me in this scale. I am going to leave them just with a wash. At the distance these will be on the shelf I think that will be fine. Is it me, or is the driver pretty darn grumpy? I managed to crack on this afternoon. Finished the wheels. Tried something new again. I scored around the wheel rim to make the divide a little deeper, then painted around with some Tamiya Acrylic thinner. When I touched a brush with some the tyre paint to the thinner it flowed around the whole rim nice and neat. After a dirty wash inside the cabin, I wrangled the driver into place and glued the rest of the hull on. Here it is with the wheels dry fitted and the other crew member squeezed into place.

Yes, I think so. Hmmmm, there's a thought, I was wondering what to watch at the weekend.

Yes he probably realises that he's been moulded by Tamiya, and in this scale, they're usually undersized! John.

SimonL
On to the final stages now. First I painted the black "Micky Mouse" pattern using Tamiya NATO Black, then a coat of floor polish before applying the admittedly small number of decals. While waiting for paint to dry I did some dry brushing with various shades of grey on the tyres and wheels. That just leaves some weathering to do. A very satisfying quick build.

SimonL
Thanks, it's the definition of a weekend kit. Really not much to it, but a lot of fun.

Rumblestripe
I have a built and painted one of these but I'd like to finish it in alternative markings. Are there any suitable transfers for this model?

SimonL
And almost finished. Weathering with various dirty washes and some dry brushing. Maybe a a little dirtier than intended. Just a few touch ups needed plus the aerials. Hopefully there will be some dry weather during the week so I can photograph the model outside.

SimonL
Thanks Stix, it will be a while - I really want to take some decent outdoor pictures and the weather doesn't look kind here for the next few days.
